Sounds to me like a classic case of somebody attempting to wire something up, making a mess out of it, getting a proffesional to do it and then not wanting to accept the fact they fucked it up. Tell the guy to jog on.

Get the unit repaired and hang on to it as a spare. This is one of the many reasons I don't bother with E-Bay
