ok, problem solved... and in the end it wasnt anything that I had thought of. Turned out to be the distributor cap. When I took the old one off there was broken off crusty plastic on the inside of it and the contact point was non existant. As soon as i changed it over and turned the engine over the car was like brand new.... hopefully this will help someone else with the same problem in the future
