the only other option is to take the old belt off go to your nearest parts place and get a smaller fan belt ,my cousins series two was doing the same thing and now its spot on with a smaller belt not the best way but it will get you out of trouble for the time being
Don't mention shorter belts

I've got a series 2 rad in a MK3 cabby and FUCK ME is it close, ive got the smallest belt possible on there and with the alternator against the block u still have to lever it over the pulleys, and ive got about 2mm clearance
