Is there any way that when an Alternater goes wrong it could affect the ECU on a Focus 1.6????

The alternator on my parents focus has gone wrong and the garage that is fixing it has turned round and said that the ecu has been damaged..

Now bearing in mind that this is a little village garage and he hasn't worked on a focus before, Is he chatting out his behind???
