Compressor surge...ie the fluttering noise is bad.

It is basically air trying to go out backwards through the compressor....when it really shouldnt be.

That can be due to having no dump valve when you let off, or because the engine cannot consume all the air the turbo is trying to squeeze in under load.

Surge is when the turbo is flowing more air than the engine can consume

Compressor surge and stall happens in all turbines, so turbo, jet engines etc.

It happens due to the compressor trying to force too high a capacity of air for the chamber to accept. This is normally overcome by means of a bleed valve on jet engines to allow excess air to escape, as if you allow this to happen it will cause early fatigue of components and also very inefficient running. Although it will not cause immediate damage, it will cause excessive wear eventually.

If you look up compressor surge and stall on google it will shed some more light for you.

Is the chatter sound happening when you're on the throttle or only when you let off?
