Question couple of technical issues

hi i posted before about this issue before i replaced lifters. hi there i recently bought a mfi rs turbo converted escort cabby. long and short of the issue is there is a tapping noise from top of engine. i replaced all the hydrolic lifters.when i started it for the first 30 seconds it was lovely then all of a sudden it started tapping badly again. the cam has been checked and all ok.

sometimes now and again the oil light flickers soon as i reved engine it clears.

my question is i want to remove the sump of my mfi cvh engine , just to check the oil pick up is not partly blocked,is it just the case of dropping the exhaust taking the starter off and the gearbox plate and i can remove it ? the sump is the modified one with a plate around the sump edge.

if this doesnt cure it can only be the oil pump in my opinion but would get it pressure tested first before fitting one, help on both problems will be great thank you all

It could be a worn engine making the oil light flicker, I've had a few do it. Is the idle speed ok?

sounds silly reply but i hope it makes sense when i drove it home 140 miles it was fine pulled lovely no smoke ect, but the throttle cable was cable tied to the rocker cover and i didnt put it back like that when i changed the lifters , i thought it should run under the plate on the rocker cover so was going to change it back, since i ran it with out it cable tied its sounds like the idle speed is to low and light is flickering on a very slow tick over near to the point of cutting out and will cut out if coming up to traffic lights, but i wanted to get the annoying tapping noise sorted first and take it to be set up

I took my sump off my S2 ERST many moons ago but the box was out at the time to change the oil pump. iirc you just remove the dust shield of the gearbox and drop the sump out, i also think you have to move some thing else as the sump fails on something as you drop it down.

The throttle cable should round the cam pulley cover and over the rocker cover into a bracket on the throttle body. iirc they had a white plastic adjuster with a spring on it.

Mfi is a pain in the ass imo, have it set up professionally is my only advise.

hi thank you i plan on attempting the sump off friday when my genuine gasket arrives, Am i going the right way around this as in would u check the oil pick up pipe is free form dirt and not partailly blocked?

before going down the road of a pump?
i thought the oil pump on a mfi engine was at the bottom of the block around the crank ? why would you need to take the gearbox out to change it ?

Agreed, it sounds like a pressure issue, hence the noise as well.

Low engine speed does not make the light come on, nor does it mean anything, the senders close at such a low pressure, that by the time the light comes on damage has already been done.

Turning the engine over should extinguish the light.

hi guys quick up date got the sump off this morning . bit of a f*** in mission but its off, looked at the pick up and there is all oil blocking the holes apart from a few which are clear so i think i have found the issue.

now for the not so good bit. on my pick up pipe it has 2 bolts for the brackets which came undone no probs same with the bottom allens screw on the pick up face.
but the top one has been screwed in that tight it has been rounded off.
so any ideas how to get this out as the allen key wont grip enough to undo it?
would a long nose pair of grips do the job as its a small are to work in,

thanks to the how to guide to remove the sump followed the steps and waiting for the genuine ford gasket to set to the sump.

Use a spline drive socket and tap that into the head of bolt.
