Default Clunky noise from engine on starting and stopping. Ideas???

Hi people!

I'm reasonably new to Fords, with my first and current fling being with a 02 Mondeo TDCi 130BHP.

I'm currently having 2 problems. Having trawled the forum, I'm guesing that the resolution to one of the problems is a new cam shaft sensor. Many contributors suggest this as being the reason why it cuts out from time to time, usually when cold and when clutching in at a junction.

The second problem has arisen over the past week. When starting the engine, it's a much less refined process than before, as in it now fires with what can only be described as a clunky noise. This happens on the moment that the engine fires. And when turning off the engine it also stops with a clunky, rattly noise. Apologies for my non-technical description of this problem but I can't do any better!

Any ideas what the problem might be?

Many thanks in advance.

Brendan

I'd say DMF too. Do you get a vibration through the clutch pedal?

When this happens to our transits its almost always the dmf paring company with itself

When you turn it off does it make a chugachugachuga sound?

It does make a bit of a clattering alright, which lasts for about 2 seconds until the engine goes dead. I didn't suspect th DMF at all, as I once had DMF issues with a Mk 4 diesel Golf and its symptom was a slight vibration on idle which would disappear when the clutch was pressed. I'm not getting any such vibration on the Mondeo.

If it is the DMF, is it likely to develop into a major problem rapidly or over a long period?

106k on her johnnysash. Not a huge amount by any means.

100k is about the life of them
Get it checked out as if it goes boom it normally kills the starter as the bits get stuck in its windings
