4WD Gearbox...
New here so hello to everyone!
I had a couple quick questions Ied be really grateful if someone could answer
Am I right in thinking the only 4WD box ford had was the MT75? Then afew variations between Sierra/Escort/Granada
If thats the case how much power do the transfer boxes take before you have problems?
The other thing was how does the MT75 distribute its power, is it evenly between back and front or is it biased, or are the front and rear diffs different?
Thanks very much for lookin

they did another 4x4 box in the early xr4x4's which had a different shift pattern to the cosworth type though i dont know if this was just a variation of the mt75
they are a rear biased split though im not sure on the exact split.
about torque around 300-350 is roughly around were the box becomes a ticking timebomb! tho hard launches can kill them with much less power

I'm sure theres a major flaw to it I dont know, my knowlage of 4WD is very very limited, apologies for that.
Until looking at a picture of the MT75 I asumed all 4wd gearboxes provided power to the front and rear from either side of the transfer box, like a discovery gearbox, and the difference between the front and rear was achived with different diffs.
Would it be possible to take an MT75 and turn it around and mid mount it so the front of the engine is at the back of the car and the gearbox faces the other way, with the rear drive powering the front wheels and transfer box output powering the rear wheels. Then flip the diffs front at rear and rear at front.
Or failing this a transverse FWD gearbox MTX75 mounted mid north/south with custom propshafts made, I've never seen it done... possible?

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
The other 4x4 gearbox is a type 9 box, this was fitted to all 4wd mk1 sierras,
Mk2 sierras have the mt75
The split is 36-64
If you turn the gearbox round like your saying you would be drive the rear wheels with the little transfer box output, would be a bit shit really!
With regards to how much power they can take ,
I have yet to kill mine in 4 years of hard launches and 2 clutches ,
I've killed my ap 6-paddle clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel and the gearbox is still fine.
Been drag racing few times this year and always full bore launch it 5000-5500k
Car is running approx 330bhp

Thanks for answering that, I had some mad idea for a mid mounted 4WD fiesta with a zetec turbo, but odv cnt be done.
The only other way I could think of (I dont want to rear mount it transversely) Use a FWD transverse gearbox but mount the engine North to South and further forward to the middle right behind the seats, and then make up two custom prop shafts.
has a fwd transverse box ever been used like that? so the shaft outputs point up and down the car not left and right. With alot of transverse boxes the shaft outputs are almost under the engine, I cant imagin it would be that far off balance from left to right. Rather than front left and right the shaft outputs would become front and back to diffs.

Put a VW 20vt engine from the Passat in the back as it's FWD on a transaxle, it'd only be RWD but it would be cheaper than building and mapping a ZT, internals are good for 400hp too IIRC
