Default RS Turbo underside 'tart up' advice please

Hi All,

looking for some advice re the underside of my escort.
Up of the floor to fit new fuel lines and decided to give it the once over.
Underneath the front arch liners & most of the cavities were waxoyled may moons ago and seemed to held held up pretty well with only tiny bits of surface rust around spot welds and edges.
Likewise the original under seal is pretty much intact. I sorted a couple of bits years ago where it had split, taking it back to bare metal, etching primer and schutz I think.
Needless to say all the brackets for the suspension could do with a thorough clean and paint.

I really don't have the inclination to strip the whole underside. Crawling around under a car doesn't hold the same fascination it did 20 years ago

Don't have the facilties to use 2K paint, hence I was thinking along the following lines:
Get it all cleaned/degreased and wire brush as much of the rust off as possible where it needs painted then use POR15 and their etching primer on any bare metal.
Patch the underseal at the few bits that need it.
Spray it radiant red with aerosols of radiant red.

A) would the original underseal accept paint if it were cleaned and primed?
B) is it worth cleaning of the waxoyl and spraying the front arches with the likes of Eastwoods rubbery stuff ?

Not trying make it concours, just trying to keep the rot at bay.
Any advice, thoughts appreciated

Default underside resto

Hi si74 the easiest way to do your floor would be to treat what surface rust there is and prime it,then coat over all the existing ford underseal in sprayable stone guard witch is over paintable , then paint it,if you are going to go through all the trouble of painting it in the first place then do it once and do it right, take off all the suspension, fuel lines brake pipes etc, start with a fresh canvas, paint into all the nooks and crannys, then powder coat or paint the suspension etc and refit, job done properly, and not wishing you had done things differently, hope this helps regards paul

Right this has become a total ball ache. Car is in bits!
Biggest headache was the amount of waxoyl I sprayed on it x years ago, has kept it in good nick but it's a real pain cleaning it all off to paint it.
Turned into a full nut & bolt job, no point expending this much energy not to do it right.
Most of the underseal off and a fair bit back to bare metal, good paint, any slight surface rust treated and a couple of coats of rusta bond in place.

Plan to use Jotun hard flex marine paint, traffic red should be near enough. Will cover it all then use stone guard and then cover it all red.

Hubs and carriers in bits.. is it feasible to have the carriers powder coated with the bearing tracks? in place.

After the last resto maybe 14 years ago, I'm not entirely convinced about powder coating, seems to rust just a bit slower than a good clean and coat of paint.

Takes me back, covered in red oxide, cut o bits and so far had brake fluid & rust convertor in my eye.. why is it every time you take of the gloves and goggles you have to mess with something else
