BMW e28 restoration update 30/12/12
We have had a bmw e28 for about 22 years now ,it sadly has become a bit too rotton ,the hunt was on for another to replace it ,back in the 1970,s 80s and 90s my father owned a bmw franchise ,as it happened we found this black one on ebay that we actually sold new ,only located in sudbury, also a 520i auto ,so popped up with steve in his van and trailer to have a look ,car turned out to be very solid with only a few minor bits needing welding ,and it had the service book stamped up with our dealer stamps (had to have it) car was a bit sad looking and the exhaust was hanging off but me and stu could see through this ,deal was done and off we went .plan is to go through the whole car top to bottom in our spare time but still keep it on the road .using the other one for donar bits as we have some good bits on it .
Paintwork got a quick correction to see the potential .
As you can see the plastic have faded and the bumpers have took a beating .
Interior is in good condition ,just dirty ,but we have an S E interior in the other one to swop .
Dash is common to crack on these ,we already had a spare
This is our original dealer sticker ,when we sold the garage i took all the stickers and plate stuff
Few pics of the two together
These pics are about a month old (above) i will add more to get it up to date

Looks nice and clean for its age polished up well too.I remember my uncle having one on a c plate in silver he kept it for years brought it when it was only a year or two old was a auto too. How would you fit a tow bar with the centre exhaust??I have always wondered that..

Next stage is the exhaust ,was blowing very badly when we got the car and was a pattern part ,knowing the people who worked for my father most are still in the bmw network ,our old parts manager is supplying alll the new bits for us
First up ,complete genuine exhaust and all the fittings
Downpipes are stainless
Also manifold off to fit new gaskets
Quiet as a mouse now

Black dot is rust hole
Old bumper past its best
Bits stripped down ,old bits of bumper have been shot blasted inside to get rid of any rusty bits ,our friend scott is doing this for us ,he also worked for our father and now has his own ding and dent firm
Next up are the wheels ,the m5 runs 16" wheels and these are like hens teeth ,the next best thing for the look is the bmw e38 7 series 16" ,picked a set up local ,just need to change the tyres for thinner ones
Pic showing new wheels against ones on car ,michelin primacy 205/55/16 fitted

Fuck the scrapage scheme! Lol I love what you've done with this m8, looks like a time warp. Nice to see old cars being kept in use too.
Well done, keep it up!

Spare uncracked dash brought out from storage ,given an all purpose cleaner session then prepped for refurb
Old cracked dash
Old dash out
Ready to go in
New lighter and ashtray ordered and fitted ,also period radio from white car swopped over
Front seats and door cards swopped over and carpet shampooed
Next stage was to do the water pump and cambelt ,we called one of our old master techs from the garage ,who does bits and bobs for us ,and it turns out looking through the service book he put a cambelt on it back in 1995
Also changed the engine and gearbox mounts
Old covers off for painting
