Default Ep3 Turbo build (plus some other honda stuff)

Just started this EP3 turbo build, we are currently waiting for parts (turbo spec was changed).

We are going for around 400hp on the stock engine. The car was around 240hp when it was dropped off with us.

This is the turbo we were going to use but decided to downgrade to something a little smaller.

Intercooler pipes are done as far as we can without turbo.

So is the intercooler. I flow tested this against a vertical core and this gave the best results. (will post pic's when I get them of the PC at work)
I've never seen an intercooler done like this, so remember, you saw it here first

Actually not on this build, the lad who works for me did it. I welded up the intercooler itself.

I'm guessing its got a "built" engine, this is going to be a stock engine remember.

Shouldn't need head work or cam's till well above that power though IMO.

Sounds good, This one is just a standard engine, i'd keep the cams and head standard till WELL over 600hp though.

Turbo is smaller now as the goals have changed. Still a GT30 sized turbo.

Making the 3" custom exhaust for it this week. Its super tight over the rear control arm.

We've used a few, HX35's infact i'm just doing a "budget build" for a customer now using a HX35. They are big, heavy, horrible things, but they make the power and do the job, great for a budget build IMO.

Welding cast isn't a problem, but heat and welding cast can sometimes have issues. I've done various turbo's and manifolds in the past and never had a reported problem. But there a pain in the arse to do at times.

There is no way on planet earth that car is making a proper 420bhp at the wheels. I'd love to see what the dyno graph that I've heard backs up the claims looks like!! I've seen the thing go remember and it drives like it's got about 275whp, absolute max. So I assume that up to 7000-ish rpm there isn't much while the turbo spools, then he gets the extra 145whp in the final 1200-ish rpm before redline?!

Also, forged or not, rolling around giving the car stress while unmapped is a dangerous game to play.

Grant

What sort of rear box is the car getting Ricky?? ....I've seen some EP3 Turbos which run an exhaust which goes under the rear arm, bit more like a straight drag exhaust.

What sort of power is the standard K20 bottom end good for in your experience??

The car isn't mapped and makes 420whp? The k20 flows masses of air, it'll spool HUGE turbo's really early.

400hp should be a breeze, there much bigger physically than the b18's and we've done over 400 on stock b18's.

Taking the exhaust under the rear arm isn't practical on a road car IMO.

Yea that's what I thought when I heard 420whp without being mapped... and after I saw the thing getting stress and not shifting anywhere near as quickly as a true 420whp car should, I seriously doubt the claim.

Brilliant. ...I'm not sure if you've had any experience or contact with a TTS Rotrex Supercharger equipped EP3/DC5 before Ricky, but if you have, how do you think this Turbo kit compare driveability-wise??

I don't think the comparison is fair to be honest. Turbo is a MILE infront. Not just on this but any car, superchargers are a thing of the past. New manufacturers are going away from superchargers, very few use them now. In a years to come, virtually every new car will come with a turbo. The supercharger on an Ep3 gives a very different style to the engine. The turbo works inline. Spools very early anyway and makes bags of power up top. I'm yet to be impressed by a supercharged Honda to be honest, there ok for lazy V8's or something with a peak VE of about 2500rpm's.

I thought tripple the power was an acheivement when we first did it a couple of years ago, how foolish all the hours i spent mapping it.

Thanks mate, i'm suprised your not back in a turbo car! I've actually got 2 people working full time now.

Anyway back to this car. Exhaust is currently been done, still awaiting the turbo. Will post pic's of the exhaust later.

I am, got another Evo 6

I might be tempted to go back to a Teg or Civic turbo tho as the Tein coilovers on the Evo are a bit harsh & my G/F does nothing but moan about it and on the baby's neck.

Did you ever get your EG finished?

I've got a 6 also, theres something about the fwd honda's that makes you though.

My EG's in a million pieces ready to paint etc, its nearly finished parts wise. Spec is somewhat bigger than before. Its virtually a full carbon body now. Removal alluminium front end, double diffuser. Sleeved b18, GT40 custom spec turbo. Hoping for 700hp and 700kg's.

Sorry, not yet, body work is pretty much all carbon. Its only half finished. But we've removed 150kg's from the previous weight 830 kg's (probably added some bits here and there though).

Power shouldn't be a problem, everything is spec'd for 1000hp but we'r going to run the small turbo for now... GT40 Progress has been slow as i've not moved it to the new garage yet. Soon as I do i'm sure we'll gain momentum with it. The problem is it usually ends in more things been cut off and less things been attached.

Heres 1 pic.

This should be around 600hp, its currently done an 11.8 at TOTB (road tyres) last year. Since gone bigger turbo, 1 of our inlet manifolds and a few other bits. We don't do everything on this car, there a few things we would do a little bit different. (silicone joiner flexy pipe to turbo etc)

Sounds like it will be setting new records on its first outing if all goes to plan.
although it never does go to plan on the first outing, lol

but thats the best power/weight combination im aware of for any UK fwd car that is likely to emerge soon.

1hp per kg is the target, its either make or break really. However it doesn't meet ANY drag racing classes. All the modern cars are heavy, so everything is 1000kg's plus. Dissapointing as limiting weight is worse than limiting power IMO. If the car's heavy it'll go slow, but it also needs more expensive parts. I.e. gearbox etc.

I'm hoping it'll go around the track*, hence the aeros and small turbo (full boost on the last lower spec engine was 4100rpm's (2.1 bar))

It will certainly not go to plan as you know, there are a few quick car's this year we'r involved in, hence me taking my time on my own.

I'll post a seperate thread at some point.

* In an insane undriveable but fun way.

Exhaust is all done and has been for a couple of weeks, but didn't take any pictures while it was on the ramp.

Still waiting for the turbo from the states. Should be here by the end of next week, there currently on back order at the moment though. A shame the customer decided to change spec at the very last minute.

Seen the videos of the yellow ep3 on YouTube, brave man to be doing that with a unmapped engine. When its racing the pulser it sounds like he ended up with a misfire. Ricky what is your customer using the car for, track or drag? If it's drag I know of a quaffie dog kit forsale

Quick Reply: Ep3 Turbo build (plus some other honda stuff)
