Default Project Betsy

Now I've been a member on here for quite some time. Haven't really spent much time on here but thought I'd come and have a look, and found myself atticted to restoration projects
Anyway I'm Sam, I'm from Bridgend, South Wales and I'm 18 in December and been driving 7 months.
Now this project is probably going to be very slow and boring to what is usually done on here. So I'l start off with my old man's cars cause there abit more entertaining...

Now the ST220 is the reason I got into cars. My Dad had two of them, an 03 Prefacelift and a 04 Facelift (Which was bought by sombody on here but now sold on).
This was his first ST220...
2003 Prefaclift 5 Speed Mondeo ST220 3.0 V6

2004 Facelift 6 Speed Mondeo ST220 3.0 V6

I promised myself I will own one of these one day, I absolutley adore the ST220, no idea why? Suppose it is the car that got me into cars. I love the V6 grunt and just the noise.

Now he's got this...
Volvo V50 R-design T5.
Underneath it's identical to a Focus ST, same engine, same chassis, same breaks etc etc.
It's a 2.5 straight 5 low boost Turbo engine which runs around 230bhp.
Anyway less blabbering about the car and get onto the pictures...

The interior is a mix of Cream leather and alacantara covered in R-Design badges.

Anyway enought about my Dad's car's and onto mine

Currently driving (and also my first car) a 1998 Peugeot 406 Family Wagon...

It passed it's MOT in March of this year at 106,571 miles. It's now showing 129,540 miles.

So far since I've had it I've...
-Replaced Every Rear Bush,
-Welded both sills and waxoiled due to rust,
-Replaced N/S driveshaft,
-Fitted Radio, door speakers, subwoofer and amp,
-Painted wood interior panels Silver, Then green and now torquoise,
-New engine mounts,
-Fitted boost gauge,
-Refurbed Injectors,
-Sortend Gear stick,
-Debadged,
-New drop links,
-Given it a good Detail,
-Driven the leggs off the poor car.

Unfortunatly it's came past economic repair well, before I had it to be honest And with a list thats ever growing of problems I'm going to be letting him go. The list...

-O/S CV Joint noisy at full lock,
-Gearbox Mount is like jelly,
-Need's new shocks,
-Glowplugs,
-Fuel Pump Needs a rebuild,
-Car feeling unstable at high speeds (think this is caused by a bit of everything),
-Rear wiper is tempremental,
-Indicator stalk catches fire if you press to go left too hard,
-3rd gear is noisy.

Ontop of that it needs new belts

The car's been a good friend of mine, I've broken down once in Birmingham when the N/S CV joint went and made driving pretty unbaerable. I keep snapping clutch cables due to a very heavy clutch but it's easy enough to drive without a clutch for a few hours to go get one. One snapped today funny enough I keep telling people my car's unreliable, but I've gone nearly 20k in 6 months (passed in March this year), I run the car on cooking oil, and I've driven it hard. Probably driven it in a way it's never been driven before. But it's a 12 year old Peugeot, what else do you expect? It's never broken down so much it's not been able to be driven. Just annoying things. It's got more rattles than mothercare but thats Peugeots for you.
Just one last thing though...

So it's making way for this...

Nice dent on the door from a hit and run

The Focus has done Start/Stop driving all it's life, always had 6 month oil changes, is due a timing belt sometime next year.
It's got warped breakdiscs which means if you hit the breaks at any more than 55-60 the steering shakes and the pedal vibrates.

I've just ordered enough oil for 2 oil changes, some petrol cleaner, 2 sump plugs, two oil filters, a fuel filter, sparkplugs and HT leads. and new break pads and discs.

I need to look into getting the bodywork sorted. Plan next year is to get a new drivers side rear 1/4, two new rear doors, repair any other little dins and dents and get it painted in white. Also looking for a new interior, maybe a MK2 Focus ST interior.
Then in 2012 once I can afford to insure a modified car I will be looking for a Reiger front bumper with Focus RS bonnet vents Focus MK1 side skirts colour coded and a ford collection rear bumper with two 2.5 - 3" exhausts abit like the ST220 but without the slash, although the collection rear bumper will have to go to a bodyshop to be modified tidy for the second exhaust. ST170 alloys lowered 35-40mm.
Other than that will be sorting out audio gear. Probably keep the standard 6000CD radio, going to get a device which connects to the CD changer input and tricks the radio into thinking my iPod is a CD changer and also a Bury Buetooth handsfree system. Fully amplified system, looking at a JBL 5 channel amp, small subwoofer and uprated components in the doors
Then as soon as I can afford it I'm planning an engine conversion, something completley different. I'm currently thinking a Jaguar X-Type 2.0 V6 or a Volvo 2.4i 5 Cyl lump

Unfortunatley insurance is a bit of an arse at the moment and I'm going to be paying £1250 for the Focus with £500 of Audio gear including sound deadning. So I'l stick to that for next year, then when I renew in November '11 again I will look into the reiger front bumper, collection skirts and rear bumper, lowering it and alloys. For now, I'm just going to tidy it up, paint it white and get it undersealed

And finding it wasen't hard... it's my Mums old car Were doing a swap, then there going to trade my 406 in for a new car for my Mum (probably a Fiat 500 or a Fiesta).

Well, atleast you admitted it then,

An ST with a GT40 lump, now that would be a project worth seeing.

Oh well, I know where you get your hands on a used Roll Royce Olympus gas turbine. That would make your Focus go. Might take a bit of adjustment to get it into the engine bay however, and you would need a bigger fuel tank.

The standard 55l tank will be fine
At the moment though I am considering dropping a Jag 2 litre V6 in the Focus in a few years will admit. But there isn't much size difference between the 2.0 and the 2.5 so miught just go for Duratec25.

This is the start of project Betsy.
I've been going on about Betsy for about 3 months now, but if you don't know heres how I aquired her...
I bought a Peugeot 406 1.9TD and called it Bernard. It was French and crap, my parents were fed up of spending out on it and give me Betsy which was my Mums old car and there trading Bernard in for a new car for my Mum.
This is how I was given the car...

I got the mats etc out and started hoovering and noticed there was choclate on the carpet in the back

Let some apholstory cleaner do it's magic...

This was the interior finished...

Exterior...
Bottom soaked in cirus degreaser...

While I was waiting for that to soak in I noticed something very strange...

Now that spoiler on the wiper is supposed to keep the wiper pressed against the windscreen at speed
So I decided to fit it the right way round

Then I went to find out if the windscren wipers were ok this way up and there was no screen wash

The wingmirror needs replacing an is held on with Gaffatape...

So tidied that up a little bit...

And thats it for today...

Right issues I've found so far...
1)
2)Warped Brakediscs Just ordered brakepads and discs
3)Front suspension knock? Hope it's a droplink, got a funny feeling the warped brakediscs have ****ed a CV joint, worse case scenario, ball joint?
4)Steering wheel ripping out of my hand if I try change gear when accelerating hard and turning at the same time? Normal?
5) High speed steering shake? Wheels out of balence? Nackered CV joint? Warped Brakediscs?

ASAP Plans...
Fix the issues :PP
New 6000CD Radio, desion ipod connectivity, bury bluetooth handsfree kit.
Fully amplified sound system with stealth install.
New bumpers, rear N/S door and respray.
Paint calipers.
Generally tidy up the car.

Future Plans...
Reiger front bumper, ford collection rear bumper, MK1 Focus Sideskirts.
30mm - 40mm Lowering, eibach front ARB and strut brace. Polybushes.
Ford Duratec25 V6 lump with Focus 2.0 MTX75 gearbox with LSD (pipe dream? we'll see )

Well the steering wobble turned out to be abit more serious than front tyres out of balence. The front n/s wheel is more oval than the ford logo itself! Mum reckons she aint been anywhere near a pot hole. It had a brand new tyre on it 2 weeks ago which means it's been done recently or the tyre place didn't notice it/tell her. Fucking annoying Hopeing it can be repaired now.

I noticed a few weeks ago one of the wheel bolts looked like it had been replaced by a normal bolt? Then after a bit of investigation I found out the ford put an aluminium cap over the standard bolts to make them look better. Few pictures to explain...

And as you can imagine, the wheel looks much nicer with a matching set of bolts now Although Ford wanted £7.99 for the bolt

EML has been on for about 2 years now

Are driveshafts supposed to have any movement in them? Trying to investigate a front end knock, jacked the car up, couldn't find any knoocking or looseness in the wishbones but then again, I'm a puff and not sure how hard you need to shake them, grabbed the drop links and theres no movement in them either. But when I grabbed both driveshafts theres about 1-2ml in and out movement in both of them? Is this normal?
