200sx S14 - Dont slag my bonnet !
Right, I know this is passionFORD but im heavily bored and seeing as im not a payed up member on SXOC.com I cant put a thread about the car in there, so deal with it
Basically the car started out as a customers at my work where we've spent lots of time extracting ponies and making the car stronger/reliable and generaly improving where the chap wanted, long story short he needed to sell up, and as I was looking for a sapph cos or something RWD and turbo at the time, I thought i'd take it off his hands!
I bought the car in september last year, and after a bit of time on the rollers and various tests it was decided that there was a head gasket issue, I kinda knew this when I bought the car but bit the bullet anyway and decided just to get on with it and fix it as the car has potential and has a few good parts fitted.
mods:
Nismo 'S' tune suspension
300zx front calipers, spacer brackets and 330mm discs
std front brakes, are now the rear brakes
S15 Viscous rear diff
partially stripped interior, momo wheel, sparco bucket seat and luke harness
300zx forged wheels with toyo R888's
Getrag Gearbox (kept blowing std ones)
padle clutch
pulsar throtle bodie conversion
JE low comp pistons
'cossie' T4 turbo
4" downpipe into twin 3" echaust
tubular ex mani
front mount IC
300zx AFM
Apexi power FC
hard pipe kit
ARP stud & nut kit
MLS H/Gasket
Saard 850cc injectors
uprated walbro 'in-tank' pump feeding external bosch 044 pump
was making between 410 and 420@the wheels with the pumped gasket, and peak power was around 500rpm lower, were expecting it to be losing around 50bhp, so we'll see what it does once it's back together.
prob a few more bits but the escape my mind atm...
Anyhoo, I decided to fix the car a few weeks ago, so head came off and suspicions confirmed the combustion had been escaping between all 4 cylinders and into the water gallery on #4 cylinder (had been pressurising the coolant above 1.2bar boost)
So, head was sent away to be checked, skimmed and valves re-done as they had some leakage.
machine shop confirmed 12thou of warp hence valve leakage and gasket failure (well gasket hadnt actually failed as such, it just wasnt clamped properly!) so engine must have been cooked at some point for this to happen as it was gone before it saw the rollers and had the boost turned up.
Got the head back, and built it all back up on saturday, other than the ex mani which im going to do tomo and hopefully get it fired up and back into the land of the living, to go back on the rollers and checked/map tweaked a little and then i'll get it insured and eventually get a drive of this car i've owned since september and drove once!!! (keep telling myself it'l be worth it lol)
heres some pics of the car and head rebuild.
Had to get a cossie part in there somehow!
Thats how it sits atm.
Future mods if it stays in one piece are, double the intercooler size, roller bearing turbo and possibly a set of mildish cams.
but, i'd be happy just to have it running and going well reliably right now, fingers crossed i can enjoy it after the head gasket swap!
cheers

Awright Richard cheers mate, Yea will be a huge difference! I've still got the S1, its in hibernation..awaiting being sold or something, not quite sure what to do with it!
Rab, cock I bought it to go fast in, not to look good, and yes the bonnet is gay, but its lighter, so err it stays unless u fancy buying me a carbon number? thought not

Ok, it didnt have a missfire it was cos im a mong and didnt set the ignition timing right (was 1 tooth out on the phase sensor thingy) anyhoo that was fine, ran minted other than theres a new crack on the exhaust manifold thats a pain to come on and off, but can live with it for a few weeks I guess....
So car got strapped onto the rollers today, ran it up with bleed valve closed (no shonky EBC's here ) and it ran 1bar of boost and made 282@wheels@7K rpm everything looked minted, small oil leak from rocker gasket but not really a prob, so we decided to give the bleed valve a half turn, that took us upto 1.4 bar and produced 355@wheels (400ish@fly), Again no problems but were running out of fuel and my bottle was going so I 'think' im going to run it like that for the moment, at least for a couple of weeks to get some use out the car, then will get it back on the rollers, give it 2 bar and were 'expecting' to see 440ish@wheels (480@fly).
Couple of pics, exhaust mani paint seemed to last....it's only rated to 650degree's C
Engine bay looks untidy, will sort this in time though, got some bubbly rear arches to sort first

Some impressive figures there Davy! That thing will fly!
Glad to hear you've still got the S1 - would be rude not to use in during this summer afert all your hard work.

Yea richard, would love to rebuild the engine to go with the rest of the car and a new gearbox i've got sitting for it! maybe make that may's mission, run it in june and abuse it july
Had the 200 out for a quick blast at lunch time today, f****k me its quick, only parts of the road were dry, on a damp road, plant it in 3rd it just light the wheels up at a higher speed than you'd like to light the wheels up! Still got .6 bar to go to get it running at 2bar as well..
I'm either going to kill myself or lose my license, nice knowing you all

jonny - think it's a sparco REV? its not bad! It does sound pretty good once its going, was thinking that earlier actually
Euan - cheers, it was at 2 bar before I took the head off it, but after 1.2 bar the gasket was just leaking so wasnt making the power it should, I think keeping it at a pony 1.4 bar for now was a wise idea after todays outing, going from a 70bhp fwd corsa to this is 'entertaining'
Hows the pug going? need to get a pass lap in at knockers sometime as i keep saying! lol

hi davie this looks like it will be fun when are you taking it to knockhill
ps why do most off these cars still run the viscous fan as i am sure they
could make more power with electric

cheers Traynor, didnt expect the heat paint to still be on after the rollers! but seems to be holding up well
Rab - c*nt, i'd love a carbon one but they're 500bucks! go halfers?
Hi Andy hows things mate? Car still going well?
I'd like to see the difference with the viscous fan off, It really shouldnt be on but I was too lazy to buy an electric fan and a controler!, the viscous one isnt even shrouded so prob isnt doing its job properly anyway....thats actually a skyline GTS-T fan as well, so its bigger than standard!

Had the afternoon off, so while im waiting on the bloody V5 to arrive I thought it was a good time to fit the 2nd intercooler as temps werent as low as we'd like (30-40 degree's flat out iirc), its basically the same as the one thats on it at the mo but will weld the new one to the old one to double the size...measured it up and it'll JUST fit in with some slight err "modifications" with the grinder
Had to cut the 3 slam panel suppor bars, which will now be supported off the intercoolers which will be bolted to the crossmember and slam pannel/headlight brackets.
support bars cut to move coolers as far back as possible to the crossmember..
Oh yeah, only got half way with it, got bored and decided to wire wheel the underside and put on some hammerite waxoil
Will finish fitting the cooler next week, and try get the bumper back on

Rab, im waitin on the V5, so while its lying doin nothing I thought i'd 'improve' it! you cock
Twins, yea they are different, actually think they drive really well, cheap to buy tune and maintain, good alternative to a cossie imo!

Well intercooler is finished and mounted back on the car, just need to fit the headlights and bumper (modify the bumper too lol). 2 IC's of similar design welded together, one 4" thick and one 3" thick, so for those who can't count its now 7" thick!
Temps werent too great on the rollers on a cold day after a few runs/flat out, so this 'should' sort that out.
I know it's not pretty, but the car aint built for show!

Do you have any more pictures of your seats?
Only reason I ask is that they look the same colour as my sparco rev...of which I cannot find a second one of! (If that makes sense!)
