Cosworth 4x4 into a 1972 Mini
#44
I'm based in Banbury, but I'm getting people who know what there doing to do the cage and suspension setup. Then I'm going to do all the tidious work like removing all excess brackets, sound deadening, wiring.
I think I might go for some 9x13 superlights as the cxr's are proving problematic as ford105e suggests. That way I can still get some 235 wide r888's

What's happening engine wise. Not going to need much power in a light little mini, a lot of power's going to be pretty wacky!

My apologies, typo, yeah i was just going to get some R888 - 225s.
As for the engine, i was thinking a stage 3 setup with around 350bhp. Hopefully that will keep me quiet for a few months until the craving for more power kicks in!!!
Although i understand that 350bhp should be relatively trouble free and achievable quite easily with a t34 and decent injectors, thinking along the lines of Sieman 55, however i already have some green injectors fitted.
Ive been spending some more money, so i will post up a few pictures of goodies I have accumulated.

would it not be easier and quicker and more safe if it were space framed and the body fitted to frame work??but then it wouldn't be tax free,,,,,well its an idea to fall back on,,

This is the second thread I've found in 5 minutes where a Sierra Cosworth's been destroyed. At least the other was an accidental fire. Is there no-one that wants to keep them in one piece any more? At this rate, it won't be long before a Cosworth powered Sierra will be considered a novelty.
If you'd have actually driven the Sierra before you raped it you would've had a smile on your face and the Mini could've been left to continue doing the honourable thing: desolve.

Abit of an update, well just a few more pictures really before the main fabrication begins:
With regards to the width, I will just be running rather large arches, about 9" wide me thinks, but the arches are the last thing that im worried about. It will be running the same width as the cosworth otherwise I would have to have all four drive shafts made up aswell. Maybe something for the future to make it even more of a sleeper.
My apologies to cozmeister, but im sure there are more than two threads of people restoring cosworths to original spec, so it kinda balances it out. I knew it wouldnt please everyone but i feel that the pros outweigh the cons.
Anyway for the pictures:
Cosworth pictures:
Below bracing across the sill and to mark where the mini will come to, hopefully that will be in the sill of the mini! Also I had a go at removing the sound deadening but I didnt get very far!
Mini pictures:
The sills have disappeared ready for the transplant, hopefully the bracing will mate to this vertical panel
Boot floor
How rusty???
And a few goodies.... but im still waiting on my alloys...
R888, with thanks from Reyland
Pedal Box, with thanks from Tony - RS Nuts
YB0611 ready for rebuild
044 Fuel Pump
Updates to continue as and when....

So in order to make more work for yourself later, you're going to use the original drive shafts and make it wider than it is long or tall, and at the same time, cut down the rear propshaft to probably half its length because it's longer than the Mini...
Methinks you haven't thought this through.
There probably is only 2 Cosworth restorations on here at the moment. But that doesn't mean it's OK to destroy one only to bodge its innards into a nasty old Mini. That's not exactly 'balance'. I welcome restoration threads. They makes a change to seeing Cossies raped for parts. I also like seeing Sierra Cosworths built up into big-power specs suitable for the track, because that's where they came from. It's just a shame you couldn't have made it 3 restoration threads.
As I see it so far, the pros and cons weigh up as follows:
Pros: Rusty arse Mini with more tin worm and less solid steel than every Ford in Europe.
Cons: Perfectly good Sapphire with apparently no rust and an apparently perfectly good engine and running gear.
I understand now. I had my 'upside-down hat' on.
Well spotted. The first step to recovery is admitting the problem.
That's the second clever thing you've said.
If you're going to wreck a Cosworth in front of Cosworth enthusiasts, expect at least one to hate you for it.
Welcome to passionford by the way.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
thats not a 044 fuel pump mate, it has more pressure, its the motorsport 10bar version, so can run more power
and get the old taxi chopped to bits lol

its a brave project, you must have a lot of experience in fabrication to even start it.
One question, why start off with a rotten mini? why not use a good shell? (looks from the pics to be well rotten~)
good luck with it , will be amazing when/if completed

It's interesting about the fuel pump. It has the same part number as the 044 but I will look further into it, cheers.
I wish I could take all the credit for completing this project but I am getting help! As to using the (rusty) mini, I initially thought there wouldn't really be any of it left once the cutting was completed so I thought to stick with it and just use it. The panels are cheap enough just to pick up and fit when needs be.
