How to identify a type 49 Escort shell ?
I'm off to look at a mk1 Escort Mexico tonight which if I understand correctly was built with the strengthened type 49 shell ?
How can I confirm that it is indeed a genuine type 49 shell ?
Cheers

That would be great but ( ) I've got to be there at 18:30
What I didn't mention was that it's just the shell . It's been shot blasted and apperantly the ID plate isn't attached so I'm a bit dubious that it's genuine.

IIRC chasis number starting with BFAT ?stamped around one of the strut tops
anti tramp bars +brackets welded to the chassis rails, double top plates on the inner wing/strut tops - The early car up to '72? had battery in boot, remote servo and hydraulic clutch cylinder on the drivers side bulk head....
could be wrong though all from memory ( i had a Mex when I was 17!)

oh and the had a yump pan also... thisis a wedge shaped fabricated ramp which sits behind the rear valence... stops mud and debris from tearing the rear valence off!

Jamz,
Where is it? I have a mate that knows EVERYTHING there is about these shells.
The only problem you have, is that without the ID tags, it is HIGHLY unlikely to be a genuine shell, but a standard item with all the Type 49 bits welded in. Obviously to someone just wanting to build a nice car, this isn't a problem, but if you thought that the Cossie bufty boys were anal, this is NOTHING to what the Mk1 boys are like.
FYI, a genuine type 49 shell should fetch well into four figures.
Perfect Mkl RS2000s go for Ł12-15k .

Nope it was proper rotten imo
It had all the type 49 bits you mentioned but the welding for the extra plates on the strut tops looked a bit iffy
It would have been a hell of a job to restore, it had little holes everywhere where the shot from blasting had found all the hidden rust. The footwells looked ok but everything from the bulkhead forwards would have need fabricating. The boot had had a fair bit of welding done in the past and what panels were still attached were quite damaged. Shame really
