Hi Everyone

read a lot on here about fuel additives for diesels, there is for and against some say they are no good and some swear by them
What do members consider to be effective in doing what it says on the tin and do they think they benefit from these products
Answers would be most interesting as I am looking for one that will clean the fuel system and clean the Turbo at the same time

You won't get anything that you put in the tank that cleans the turbo. It's just not possible. Even the dedicated kits that involve squirting foam directly into the turbo have little effect. They'll remove some of the 'soot' but much of the gunk that builds up will remain in place.

In my experience Terraclean was a waste of time (made no difference to mpg or performance). There are plenty of fluids you can put in the tank, which may make a small difference while they're in the system - but it's largely snake-oil and won't really make any useful improvements.

Thank you for your reply, reading this my decision now is to carry on using wynns injector cleaner in the tank, I think it certainly cuts the smoke emissions, but as to the Turbo its a matter of waiting for warmer weather and removing and de carbonising on the bench with carb cleaner, Thank you again, hope to find a member in the Derby area that may advise or assist when the time comes

There's a lot of good things said about using mineral based 2 stroke as it gives the pump and injectors a bit of extra lubrication, I haven't tried it though.

Forte is awesome stuff. I had to do loads of tests on a car with there treatments when I had my garage to get on the good garage scheme and was pretty impressed with some of the results

I might try forte in the tank but whats the difference between Forte and wynnes fuel cleaner anyone know

Tried it in my old mondeo.

Total waste of time. Made no difference to anything.

Totally disagree, using 2stroke in the subaru wrx turbo, it's quieter on cold startup, it rattles less on hard revving. Much smoother.

I used it in the wife's range rover diesel and she said motorway was smoother .... So there lol.

We seem to be scared of additives in our country and I really can't see why. It's almost as if because it doesn't work for one person it's considered snake oil and nobody else uses it.

In America they swear by mineral oil, very frequent changes and additives and they seem to get much more life out of their engines than we seem to.

I got given a 306 on the cheap, very cheap. It was burning a fair amount of oil and couldn't get through it's emissions. A few oil flushes, a few litres of redex and a lead right foot for a week or two and it flew through its emissions, stopped burning oil and I was able to sell it on for a little profit.

I used a few amount of additives in the last few years across 3 diesel cars. I usually buy them out of curiosity more than anything.

My '08 Mondeo starting going into limp mode if I put my foot flat to the floor quickly, however if I was gradual with the accelerator there would be no issues. The codes stored were related to the turbo, turbo actuator and turbo boosting too high.
My Mondeo had always been run on premium diesel and was doing long journeys but at the time with only local work the car wasn't getting it's usual ~100mile drives every day. The problem got worse and worse and with 150k on the clock and faced with turbo replacement I tried something else first.
I purchased two cans of BG244. I used two one after the other in my Mondeo at 150k. First one went in and I tanked up and drove from Bridgend to Bruges, to Penryn and back to Bridgend where I tanked up again with the second can. About a week into the second can with my standard commute I booted it up a steep hill and a huge amount of thick black soot came out the rear end. After that the turbo spooled faster, there was no limp mode and the car was quieter and more responsive. Highly recommended.

If you want regular use additives then Millers Ecomax is well regarded or have a look into using Mineral Two Stroke oil. I've used the Two Stroke oil on several diesels now with very interesting results.

Plenty of food for thought there, My enquiry regarding this matter is I bought the car 2005 Mondeo Ghia 2.0ltr, the previous owner was a garage but showed no service record after 2008, I had it serviced oil, fuel and air filters all changed, ran well for 2 days until I went to London and had a problem with Black smoke and cut out, AA man tested the codes and had to change the EGR (ouch) 3186 lighter but still smoked so had to have taken back to Derbyshire, car still smokes light blue so suspecting split turbo pipe, I am now in France and cannot check this till 2 week Dec, hopefully this is the problem, but for the future I would like to try and keep the system clean by using some method of an additive, trial and error I think

meant to say £186 lighter, also have EML light on with glow plug so after examining and changing split pipe (fingers crossed ) the lights will cancel themselves or is this wish full thinking, any thoughts or advice most welcome

Works for some not others then. 2.0 tdci 07.

Not tried it in my jeep but that things very quiet and smooth anyway so probably wouldn't see any difference in that either.

I think the biggest benefits of 2 stroke is extra lubrication for the pump and injectors to make them last longer.

+1 for the Millers Ecomax.

I have a 04 Mondeo TDCI and after about 6 months of having it , it started to give off a bit of blue smoke when started from cold. It continued and got worse until there was a hell of a lot and getting worse every week.

I put a post up on here and a few people said it was injectors so I decided to give the Millers stuff ago. I did the double strength amount and filled the tank up completely and went for a long drive to make sure it was in the system. I did some hard acceleration up some hills and waited until the next morning to see if it had made any difference. To say it worked is an understatement, there was zero smoke on start up and it has continued to work 6 months later.

It is quite expensive in Halfords so I buy it off eBay at about 8 quid a bottle as opposed to 15 at Halfords. The only bad thing is it stinks so be very careful not to spill it in your car as I did , it still smells a month later!

The Enigma

Is It the 2.0 litre diesel? Try Millers Ecomax, I've got the same engine and has helped a lot with blue and black smoke. Worth a try for under a tenner.
