Default Powder coating Q

Basically I want black exhaust tailpipes. On my car they are removable by way's of drilling out rivets, anyway....To buy them at discount from bmw they are £300 for 4. they don't come up on ebay, and when they do they aren't any cheaper. So I was wondering if I could powder coat (I want a smooth gloss finish to match other trims on the car) but wasn't sure what temp powdercoat would be "ok" up to. I understand they go in an oven to cure, and also have no idea what temp the tailpiped would reach, wouldn't imagine it would be that hot unless it was on track, which it probably won't be....

Found this here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3312498161...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
which would be ideal as I wanted to chop another exhaust open to do the OEM exhaust mod, but he wants £435 for the backbox delivered....probably not a bad price considering but still a bit more than I wanted to pay!

Any idea's?

Maybe stove enamelling would be better mate, I think powdercoat would be fine though as I'm sure tailpipes don't get hot

Can't imagine the heat will affect the powder coat more the soot and petrol, I would have them powder coated with a polyester clear after the black.

You will be surprised just how hot the tail pipes get on a modern car, they run very hot to meet the emission criteria,

I'm not sure powder coating would take it,
Stove enamel would be ok i think but its more of a satin black finish, is there no way you could use slightly oversize tail pipes and get some thermal protection in between the exhaust and the tail pipe?

I would be careful the heat doesnt make the coating go tacky, once it gets to this stage then any dust or debris attaches itself to the coating and it is then ruined.

Not sure about tailpipes but ive seen heat shields go like this once coated with poly powders

Cerakote is the way forward for components that are exposed to heat, you can do pistons and turbo housings so a tail pipe should be no problem.

I used a local gun smith to do a few parts on my Cortina as the coating is so thin you can coat moving parts and threads, very durable as well.

Cheers for the input guys, I've decided if im going to do anything i'll buy the ebay exhaust, as I can chop it open and do the OEM exhaust mod and keep my original un touched if/when I sell up and then sell the modified one with black tips and make some money back. Got him down to £385 delivered, just trying to decide wether to go ahead or not.
