Angry Mk4 fiesta help

Hi guys, I have a mk4 fiesta 1.25. When I turn the ignition on the temp gauge goes straight to hot, without the engine running with a stone cold engine
It's not overheating it's more of a electrical problem. Still does the same if I disconnect the temperature sensor on the thermostat housing?? Please help it's driving me insane!!

could simply be a fault on the speedo cluster which is common and the whole unit 2nd hand is peanuts and easy to change,

Not sure about the 1.25 but the 1.3 had two coolant sensors, one was the switch for the fan the other was a sensor for the gauge and engine management
