i think if the opplinger boxes had been available a few year ago no one would have bothered with the skyline box conversion.they seem to have solved the problems that other upgraded boxes didnt quite do

I think the switchable RWD is the only reason really to justify the skyline over the opplinger box, if being able to go RWD is no big deal to you I cant see the point in all the extra hassle involved in the skyline one.

I have been doing a lot of research with Oppliger and Bara on this.

The Bara Kit linked by Jay is the std ratio kit at around Ł1500 GBP, even with 500 bhp and Torque plus the Borg twin spool there is still a gap betweed gears as the boxes are geared for over 170 mph which is not ideal for a road car to get the best out of the engine. The close ratio ones are tqice the price.....then if you are going to drop even Ł1500 you need to rebuild the box with bearings and seals etc....there is almost another Ł1500 if you use everything recommended by bara including testing on the dyno etc..

As I am putting in the 3.9 Supra diff you also need drop gears to suit but that has been allowed for in the Ł1500 extra.

The Oppliger close ratio box takes the total to Ł4300 euros including the cradle for the gear change and fully built up.

We also need to consider that you would be daft to spend over Ł3000 and not do a hydraulic clutch conversion, fit a new clutch suitable for the power and if you have done that much the flywheel probably needs replacing...another Ł1000 to Ł1500.

As Sonic Boom says, people spend Ł10k on an engine but need to consider Ł5ish for the running gear.

My Supra diff kit, second hand diff, Bara complete rebuild and setup of ramp angles etc stands me in at Ł2000 and it isnt even on the car yet!

The 3.9 ratio diff and drop gears drops the top speed by around 15% so I am just working out if I will really need the close ratio or not...I have referred this to Mark Shead as he knows my engine characteristics and the road use planned for the car...although when I have 530 bhp on the long studded block with cams and pistons plus a sorted transmission it would be a shame not to see how it performs up the strip based on sticky tyres and the lightweight Pug 205 shell.

thanks for all that mate youve answerd a few questions in thier for me, i was planning the supra rear diff also. been given a contact from here to source the diff, my projects in the gathering parts phase at the mo i like to have everything organised befor starting. it will be fast road some track, and the car is fairly heavy once converted to 4x4 i think the extra weight added on top has put me off, i will be around the 500-550 mark also but i think the std ratio,s will be more suited for my build, what are you doing about the front diff mate?

The front diff can run with the 3.9 rear supra diff when using the correct drop gears.

According to MAD and Bara the front diff is up to the job but the strengthening plate and a simple bara rebuild should do the job....I think there is a Quaife option

The 3.9 diffs can be hard to find, mark at MK did my kit and found the diff but it took a long while to find and it went straight to bara to be rebuilt.

When I was in Malta 8 years ago, a guy there had done a R33 conversion on a 3 door the same way you're starting.
Not a perfect solution, but it worked at the time for him.

I would worry about relying on the input shaft to line it all up spot on.

They tend to have a lot of play in them...

I must say that's not a bad way of doing it to be onist as the skyline in put shaft it 10mm longer than the Cosworth one so stands a good chance of it working ok

It's not the strongest, but certainly the easiest and cheapest as far as DIY goes.

As with lots of patience, it can be done DIY with no real specialist tools for the most part

excellent way of doing it replacement gearbox is a bolt on affair then aswell

such a shame ford didn't use a decent gearbox for the cosworths like Nissan did.
