You can buy metal polishing kits on ebay with a few different heads and compounds, bare polished rim wheels are a nightmare to look after.

If you do them to a mirror polish you will struggle to get lacqure to take to them, i know i need to go over my bbs wheels nearly every time the car is used in the wet or they stain.

i dont use my toys in the rain so that is no worries. would i be better of to just get them proper gleaming and not lacquer them then, just a hand wash and polish every couple of weeks ?

As above then use a good sealer wax on them and only use a non acidic wheel cleaner.
