Default Am I licensed to drive a flatbed recovery truck???

What I want to do is buy one of those long wheel base ford transit flatbed recovery trucks to take my car to trackdays so i have a way home in case of any "mishaps".

Nobody seems to be able to give me a straight answer.

Somepeople say that as long as the combined weight is less than 3.5 tons I'm ok others say I can only drive it unloaded.

As expected the DVLA website is not really that clear so I'm not sure where I stand.

Any one know the answer??

PS i have a standard car license passed in 1998 after they bought out the minibus and trailer ban for new drivers.

if you passed your test before or in 1997 then your fine, if not it depends on gross loaded weight.

just reread your question. upto 3.5 ton on a rigid body is ok.

im having to sit a trailer test justnow as ive found out my licence dont cover it

I'd say yes, you would be perfectly legal.

So the ones where you bolt little ramps on the back and drive on are ok, but the ones where the floor moves on hydrualics to aid embarking a vehicle are not allowed on my license????

I'd call the dvla up mate, the last thing you want is to get pulled by the law for something you were unaware of.

think as long as its fixed body, ie no trailer your ok.

quote from dvla site -

Motor vehicles with a MAM not exceeding 3500kg having not more than 8 passenger seats with a trailer up to 750kg. Combinations of towing vehicles in category B and a trailer, where the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3500kg and the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.

You can drive it, but u cannot exceed 3.5t TOTAL weight. so know the weight of your veichle and also anything you are going to carry on it. cos you looking at 1-1.5 tonne for a car depending what it is so that only leave 2 tonne, so your falt bed cannot exceed this.

get me?
