Default Cosworth L8 ECU or Aftermarket?

Basically i need a L8 ECU and loom. But i want other bits too like:
New loom
wasted spark
closed loop
stage 3 chip
plus i still need to buy a L8 ecu

The chances of me finding a 2nd hand ecu with the bits i need are not exactly high so i been thinking about aftermarket stuff as its going to be not far off the same price when you factor everything in.

Omex 600 is around £600+loom and bits so say £850
Or other ECU types?

Anyone on here run Omex or can recommend something?

All depends who your use to map it. Being in Blackpool surly Webber is a good choice for you as you have m.s.d on your doorstep. If you was down south it would be a no brainer as m.a.d is here. A good mapper is more important than the ecu

Yeh, MSD is about 2 mins away from me, plus keeping L8 most bits are "off the shelf" and i know they do anything i would need with out me having to travel miles.

The L8 is the only half difficult part but try Gary @ RS Classics or Paul @ North Yorkshire RS Spares etc.

Few different companies doing brand new braided looms with correct connectors, wiring lengths etc.

MSD will do everything else! So lucky they're so close. I was over twice last year! Totally worth it though.

If you can afford it though and for a modern brain to run everything...aftermarket seems to be the common consensus around here

I have an L8 running stage 4 and it's tip top.

Philip.

MSD will do everything i need, new looms, bits, chip ect ect just not the actual ecu

but adding all this up your at the same money for a aftermarket ecu. but of course there is more to buying a ecu than just wiring it in.

I can see + and - for both just dont know what to go for.

If people had the cash in there hand what would you chose?

Well, maybe i can help you out Here. I've got a green lable Weber super 8 injection set-up
all of a 4x4 saff. It already has a programmed chip inside done by GGR and is complete with Pectel baby board and it's dedicated loom for the extra injectors.
Any good to you?
Almost forgot, i also have MSD's wasted spark kit, coils and the ness. Twin amps fitted onto a proper aluminium heat sink, I ran it in my Vw turbo 16v engine years back but, unlike you, i don't have ant way of reprogramming it by the likes of Stuart Sanderson of MSD, if only..
If Your interested send me Your email and i'll get you some photos.

Either a omex, megasquirt or a boost monkeys Gen8, I resume this is for you escort zetec turbo? There is a good lad in blackpool for mapping, Rick who mapped mine is only in Stockport.

If you was already on weber/cossie management then maybe get the additional bits like wasted spark, if your starting out fresh get something new with all the features out the box rather than a easily 20 year old+ ecu. I fitted cossie management on my escort, major mistake and after no end of problems ripped the lot out and threw it all in the bin.

If you want to buy L8+ loom+wasted spark system, you will pay a fortune for an old ecu, for about 700euros you can buy the EMU ecu with all wires for the engine loom, and this ecu have them all, plus you can use high impedance and big power injectors for better pattern spray etc!

Go aftermarket. As ajamesc said pick the mapper and go from there on recommendation. Why not ask msd if they will map an after market for you.

I like to think of the L8 as an old fashioned computer compared to an up to date one with the after market.

Go aftermarket. This gives you a free choice which sensors to use.
For instance the Weber-Marelli map sensor is hard to get now.

I had the same dilema when i built my saph so went down the Omex 600 route. Better ecu and new loom - its a no brainer really.

i recently bought another omex 600 ecu as sold my last one when i stripped the car. Bought this on second hand for 450 - am budgeting 250 for a new loom. I already have a map from my previous car so that will be enough to get it running and can then start mapping it myself as was not happy with the person who mapped it last time

They can be mapped with other map sensors.

This is so true.

If it were me, I'd choose my tuner/mapper then go on their recommendations....

Cheers Paul

I can answer that for you, of course they can map it, whether they chose to is another matter, up to them of course - time constraints and all that.
