Default cosworth 3 door temperature query

got a few questions about my 3 door..
the temp gauge goes only about a quarter maybe less up the gauge..
the car is fitted with a 200 block and i suspect thermostat hsg[3 bolts and a bleed screw] when first started and idling it gets warm both sides of thermostat. pipe into the water swirl pot[aftermarket] on the rhs i would have thought should remain cool until stat opens?
i would like to replace the stat and temp sender-i assume a 4wd stat will do it,but i need the older temperature sender to suit an 87 car[as it sends to the dash]
anybody got a link to wel, priced quality components..?

thanks

First thing i'd say is not to trust the dash temp gauge - they can vary lots from car to car. If you are worried try fitting an aftermarket gauge and check the temperature that way.

thanks folks-heater blows warm so at least it works
rad fans at front both work now i"ve replaced the fuse-but they are both through one relay instead of one each..so will alter that too.and will pop a new stat in with fresh coolant

The senders are cheap enough - I have no idea why they go off with age but mine did.

Your thermostat should open at 82 degree C . your should aim your gun at the elbow where the thermostat if located.
But don't be shy and take readings from your header tank/rad/turbo cooler(if present) this will allow you to build an overall picture of the efficiency of your coolent system and allow you to pinpoint problem areas.
It is a common issue with the 3 door re temp (overheating)due to the design of the head and it's proximity to combustion chambers. I live in Malta and all the pre-rads and coolers in the world cannot sort this out on this head design.
Keep an eye on your temps and save your car.

My Best.

Tim .
