the big difference is the block & head

205 blocks were fitted to 2wd
200 blocks were fitted to 4wd
the 200 block is superior to the 205, stronger and can be long studded. The 4x4 head is better than the 2wd head

The exhaust manifolds are different as well as the inlets. the 2wd exhaust manifold flows better than the 4x4. The 4x4 inlet manifold is better than the 2wd as it allows more flow.

that's the big ones covered......i think

Wonder if theres any major differences in the engine internals? As Ford declared, upto 80% engine parts were modified in the 4x4 version.

Modified for cost reasons no doubt. Was the 4x4 the first to have offset gudgeon pins or was that the 2wd?

only major difference was the offset pin for the 4wd pistons to combat piston slap

few other differences like the sump, oil pick up and possibly oil pump.

think not mate, as the 200 block (4x4) is stronger has more meat on it etc etc to take the strain of the 4x4 running gear, so if you put the 205 block through that strain i dont think itll last long.

200 engine in a 2wd is fine, but need to change the sump and oil pick up.

i wouldnt use a 205 block in a 4wd car, the 200 block is designed to take the strain of the running gear on a 4wd

Load of rubbish. 205 block can run 4x4 system I have done for the last 4 years because my 200 block was cracked to bits!
Heard people say this before but haven't heard any horror storys.

+1 dude.

Seen a 200 block snap the gearbox lugs off, but never a 205.

It's not what you've got, it's how you treat it.

200 block is just a stronger casting, you can use one in 4x4 but as said it may not be a wise idea due to the transmission stress, hence why Ford didn't, being able to run extra power with confidence is just an added advantage!

The 4x4 (YBG) is a better engine really, as said Ford claimed 80% of components were changed, for example it has a better cooling system than a 2WD.

That is the 'YBJ' you are referring to, these essentially have a RS500 block.

I get what ya saying, the casting itself is thicker but not the mounting points for the diff brackets.
I wouldn't shy away from using one again. I must say that it hasn't had a easy life at all and it's still ok !
The 4x4 cooling is almost identical to the plumping on a zetec very effiecent and works very well
All my mates with 2wd heads have had agro

Aren't both 4x4 blocks the same, YBJ and YBG? I thought their only difference was the cat and lambda in the YBG engine.

I have YBJ engine in my -91 4x4 and it says ''200'' in the sides of the block.

Perhaps both were available?

I am sure YBJ has a RS500 block (and so 205).

Defo correct re the cat and Lambda though and also the cam covers were different colours.
