Default erratic rev counter

Hi Guys
I just started messing around with my car and hopefully looking to recommission it back onto the road next year as its been sat since 2001
however it hasnt been started much over the years but i have an issue in that the rev counter is all over the place 3k on the dial on tickover jumping up and down etc.
Has anyone had this prob and how did they sort it?
Would it happen to be the little sensor that is screwed down onto the coil bracket?
Any advise would be great
thanks guys
Paul

The little "sensor" is a suppressor to stop radio interference from the ignition system, and can't cause what you have.
I would start by cleaning up the earths around the battery, chassis, but it may be the tacho is on the way out.
