Default Speedo problems

I have a 2wd sapphy, with a now duff/ish speedo, it was all great for years, then all of a sudden dropped from around 90/100mph(private road!!) to about 20mph, sometimes creeps up to 40-55 reading correctly but other times stays stuck on 20mph.
I got me spare speedo out but is 150mph one!!, but looking at it, can't see any way it could be prevented from reading correctly unless the drive gear in the box is slipping.
Is this a known problem ?
I'm going to take my existing one out as have to do that anyway, and look at it hoping maybe the lockwood dial kit has lifted slightly and causing the needle to stick.
Anyone else had problems like this, I have seen it before with dial kits.
Failing that might just go lecky speedo as tacho has given up as well sometimes!!
Cossie's, don't you just love them!!
thanks

I stripped mine as it was sticking Tabs. You could feel it tighten after a few spins by hand with the speedo out. It seemed to be related to the milometer as far as I could tell. Suffice to say that when fitted another milometer (after resetting the milage correctly I might add - lol) I've not had any more problems.

Good luck pal,

Andy

I spun the speedo manually with speed controlled device, and it is bang on up to all speeds, so that is why it must lie in cable or drive pinion.
I even went to the ford dealer to ask about a drive pinion, he said "I need to know how many teeth yours has", so isaid I don't know but onb the 2wd cossie they only have the one that ford used, so he said I will order that then, oh no it's on back order.
I then asked how many teeth has it got, he said "I don't know", so I said well if you don't know how many it has what is the point of asking me how many mine has ?
He wouldn't even serve me until I told him the reg number, despite my telling him it's too old for the system, so he puts the number in then says, "it's too old for the system"!!!
You just can't get the staff these days, he then asked me to leave as I was being awkward!!
