Default Focus Error Code

The engine warning light came up on our 2007 Focus Zetec this morning. I did the trip button test thing and got error E196. Anyone know what is means ?

edit: Apologies for putting this in the wrong section, but I swear all the other sub sections weren't there when I looked before

No one ? Google says it is E196 Invalid Data For Engine Rpm. But nothing seems to actually say what the problem is.

Pressing the trip button while turning ign on just gives you dash and canbus related errors, it does not read engine DTC's. You'll need a code reader plugged into the OBD port for this.

Cheers chaps. Just had a proper scan done and it looks like the EGR valve. The mechanic checked it quickly and reset the lights and they have stayed off so far. He quoted Ł150 to replace with a genuine part, so I have a few Newbie questions …
Is that a good price ?
Is it a diy job I really should be doing myself ?
Will it damage anything if the light comes back on and I don't replace the valve for a few weeks ?

You can probably do it yourself if you are handy with the spanners, shouldn't be a hard job. It shouldn't cause any issues if the light comes back on, it will just use more fuel and be a bit sluggish as the engine is running in a safe mode rather than using its sensors to give peak efficiency.

If it's a 1600 TDCI with a PSA engine (french) the EGR valve needs 'programming' on IDS (Ford dealer tool) when a new one is fitted.
