Default Which tdci is best for me?

Howdy all.

I'm currently thinking of buying a focus diesel and am wondering which engine is best for me.

I am a driving instructor so reliability and fuel economy are most important for me, although I currently have a fabia vrs and am no stranger to a spirited drive so I'm wondering whether the 1.6 might be a bit underpowered for me. I've also sussed that the 1.8 is an older engine and the 2.0 has certain issues with it.

Can anyone enlighten me further as to which is best?

Does anyone know if reliability differs between the different engines? If so, what sort of issues tend to crop up?

As above, I would go for and I do have a 1.8 TDCI (I think they were fitted up to 2009 !) ! As you rightly say they are an older design and while they may not produce the power or fuel economy figures of the others they are a good and well proven engine and they don't have the troublesome DPF's that the others have ! Having said that like almost all diesels they aren’t trouble free and if you’re using it to teach then you will expect to be replacing the clutch and probably the dual mass flywheel as well, this is a straight forward job but can be costly and as you’ll be aware instructor cars will go through these parts quicker than normal. Other things that can go are obviously the turbo and possibly injectors and fuel pumps, although as with most modern cars they will if correctly maintained give good and mainly trouble free service.
