Default Escort RS turbo Fuel Tank

Leaking fuel tank....

I've got a 1989 RS turbo.

Built in May 1989 - exactly the changeover month between 88 and 90 spec.

Everyone says that the only way to find out which tank is fitted is drop it.

BUT.....

From looking at these photos - from carpartsexpress - there is a pipe next to the filler pipe on my old tank.... so that would suggest its it 88 spec tank i need...

or does it?

Maybe the tanks from CPE are not exact copies of the original ford ones?

anyone know?

so after a lot of research on the internet

bolts might want to snap wd40 and plenty of back and forth if so

Yeah - easy - except I'm on a gravel drive and ramps blasted well move too much :-( anyway, managed to get the tank dropped to have a look.

pre 90 your supplier says in-stock Ł69.99
you gotta get car higher to change, as the strap needs moving to the left
spray the filler pipe with wd it`ll help get it out , and when refitting
bit of a b*stard to wiggle out but not 3 bad.
hose clamp may need cutting if rusty on 1 inch pipe,
undo it whichever end is easiest, , less fuel in there the better, as they weigh aton when half full. , put a slab of carpet on floor to save scratches on new 1

Thanks - Great advice there - really appreciate it. The kind of thing I won't think about (e.g. carpet to protect the new one). I'm wondering whether I should spray / paint the new one to protect it? Any advice?

dropped my efi tank to change the pump, saw some areas of rust, so fully cleaned it ,
then applied a couple of coats of zinc rich paint, then stonechipped mine, then hoofed a litre or 2 of old engine oil everywhere except the rubber pipes,
you could just spray wax on it, or hammerite it,
worth doing saves you having concerns later on
