Rs Turbo Misfiring.. Now Sorted! Fuel Issue Problem Found & Fixed :)
Hi all,
Been trying to get my RS turbo started today and its running really lumpy as its been sat for a year and a half.
I have checked the following:
Dizzy cap
Metering head unit
Changed injector seals
Changed the HT leads
The engine is misfiring and I cant figure out how to sort it. I'm getting fuel through all the injector pipes from the metering head, spark is good from 1 - 4.
Is there anything that I might have missed because I have checked the car over and over again and I still can't figure it out.
I'm going to buy a set of brand new spark plugs tomorrow to see if this will sort the problem but if anyone could just give me some advice as to what else the problem could be.
Thanks

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
could well be plugs mate. how much boost do you run? ive heard that due to the nature of the fuelling, the higher the boost equals the higher fuel rate required which is obvious. except that mfi means the onboost fuelling been spot on leaves the rest of the range rich. as its all or nothing. theres very little if any scoipe for fuelling both on boost AND mid/partial throttle openings. as a result the plugs have a hard time.
while the spark appears healthy when checking (under no load/compression) it can easily be overlooked. things are alot different under compression and engine loads. its worth checking leads/connectors anda general looksee through the possoible culprits. easy way is to remember the basic rule. an engine needs air/fuel/ignition. if you have fuel and assuming a pigeon isnt living in your airbox then id look at the ignition side of things. a check of the timing may be worthwhile for elimination purposes.

Thanks for the quick reply guys.
The engine is running 15 psi. I literally just checked the timing on the engine just now and it is all spot on everything has been timed up perfectly
I forgot to buy spark plugs today when I went to speedshack so gonna get a new set along with a new fuel filter too tomorrow.
Will be doing a compression test tomorrow too.
Anything else I need to look out for in case none of these things work? I knew I should have gone straight to efi when I did the conversion
*edit*
forgot to mention that I have a recon cylinder head on there so doubt its gonna be stuck lifters.

Well I changed the spark plugs today along with the fuel filter but still getting the same thing. Going to change the dizzy cap tomorrow got a spare somewhere need to find it.
This is really pissing me off.. Has anyone got any other ideas as I'm fed up

either it has worn the bottom off the tappet or its worn the cam lobe away! they will both create a miss fire due to lack of valve lift. pop the cam out and have a look.

I'm backk .. Its still misfiring on idle and when i rev it
Took the cam out and changed it with a spare I have and I'm still getting the same thing! Its driving me absolutely mental.
I changed the injector seals, there is fuel flowing through all the fuel pipes fine, I found my spare distributor unit and I think its for an S1 as it has a vacuum pipe connection which my current one doesn't have, and the plug is different, so that went out the window
Its misfiring on the cylinder 2 and 3. I have a translucent blue dizzy cap and you can actually see that spark isn't coming from number 2 and 3.
The distributor connector housing is broken so I'm not sure if this is going to make a big difference as it was working fine before? Does anyone have a working distributor unit that I could buy off them? Unless anyone has any more ideas for me?
The lifters were a bit tight but I removed them without too much trouble.
Gonna do a compression test tomorrow need to pick up the tester from my mates house.
Will putting fresh fuel in make a difference at all?
Thanks for the help guys!

Didnt get a chance to do a compression test today. Think i'm gonna buy a group a coil see if that fixes the misfire. Can I cut the connector from the loom or am I gonna have to get one of these looms? Don't mind forking out for the loom but if I don't need it then there's no point right?

Also was looking at wasted spark. What are the benefits of it?

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Don't rule out the basics before throwing more parts at it, get rid of old fuel, put fresh in.
Check the compressions. You say it's got a recon head, how long ago?
I recently faffed around for a couple of days on a car, all it had was contaminated fuel that kept fouling the plugs. New plugs and fresh petrol, away it went
Other thing is, if you say you have one of those see-through dizzy caps and see no spark on 2/3, have you tried another cap?

Without sounding stupid, you say you cant see a spark in the cap for 2 and 3? I would say this means either your rotor arm is fooked or the coil. I dont think anything else would cause no spark in the cap?

I have no idea how old it is. I tried to clean up the connections inside the coil and in the rotor arm but still no luck, so what I've just ended up doing is I've brought a group a coil off the msd website so hopefully it'll come by monday, and will update you guys after I fit it!

im gonna fucking set my car on fire
The group a coil came today, fitted it with no problems, it was a piece of piss took me 5 mins to change but I just cant figure it out
Still need to do a compression test and put new fuel in but im just fed up with it for now.
Just uploaded a video of the engine running. anyone got any ideas?

It sounds like its running on 3. But my escort will idle on 3 where yours sounds like it just dies. You deffo got a spark on all 4? If so id say its got to be a fuellin issue?

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
if you get healthy compression readings, id look at the possibilty been fuel related, assuming your getting spark/timing is correct ect. old fuel can crystalise leading to small drillings/jets or indeed injectors getting gummed up. whip the injectors out or swap some about once youve diagnosed which cylinder isnt firing. bound to be summat simple, especially as its been stood a while. keep us posted tej

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
You may also want to check and verify the spark plug wire firing order.
I have had engines running (very poorly) with 2 wires on the wrong plugs.
Check at the distributor cap for proper firing order.
Cheers

Finally got round to doing a quick dry compression test. Still need to do a wet compression test but the results are as follows:
1 - 8.5 bar
2 - 7.9 bar
3 - 8.0 bar
4 - 8.0 bar
When I took the spark plugs out, 1 and 2 had black residue, 3 and 4 were brand spanking new (as if I had just put them in and not started the car)
What would be the easiest and least messy way to empty the current fuel out of the tank? Also once the new fuel is in would it be wise to keep the engine running even though its misfiring to just use up all the fuel already in the system to see if the engine stops misfiring and starts running normally?
