Default Heart Rate/Training - Cycling

Right Ho..

Just got myself a bike to get fit and what not....

Also got a heart rate monitor.

Aim to do about an hour or so 4 or 5 times a week.

I'm 30 - 14stone - 88kgs.

Not very fit.

I am sat here with the heart rate monitor on and its reading between 80 and 90ish at rest.

When I was out earlier it averaged about 120 over 40 mins (8.5 miles) and max was 150.

Is anyone clever enought to:

A Give me some idea of what all of that above might mean or point me somewhere that might.

and

B Give me an idea of what I should and should not be doing - I am hoping to use the heart rate monitor to help achieve increased fitness and loose some weight - I don't just want to go off cycling willy nilly and hope for the best.

Ta

Jake

to fat burn your heart rate should be running between 133 bpm (70% working) and 152 bpm (80% working) keep it inbetween job done

There is a formula which is crude but I would say good enough for what you want to do.

220 - your age = MHR-Max heart rate x 80% (cardio zone) or x 65% (fat burn zone)

So for you, your optimum cardio zone is 152bpm and fat burn zone is 124bpm

An hour in your fat burn zone should rid you of around 1000 calories at your weight assuming you're 5'10 ish?!

If you've bought a polar T31 chest strap its a good bit of kit. Use the same myself.
Have a look at the polar website as there is a lot of useful info on there.

Best of luck

FUCK the calculations, just get out and ride, you'll drop the weight and feel fitter in no time. I know I did

Or do it his way It will work, but not quite as well.

You obviously bought the HRC to use because you want to train and get as much benefit as you can from the time you put in. I do! as would most people I think. Who the fuck wants to run, ride, row for giggles? Therefore, getting in the right zone HR wise is essential.

This is a decent guide. Just put your age in where it says and it will give you the right numbers for each zone.

What he said, sack it off and build up your miles and hours on the saddle, once you can do 20+ miles or 2 hours in the saddle then use the HRM alongside timing yourself over a set route, there you can measure your heart rate and timing, if you work at it a couple o month you will notice a big difference.
