The valve you have circled is a port used to pressurise the coolant circuit, they are made the same dimensions as a tyre Schrader valve TR4, any machinist should be able to make one in alloy for welding to a header tank (as per your pic) or you could buy an aluminium valve from somewhere like Merlin motorsport or Demon Theives and mechanically couple it to the header tank on a flat surface.....

why not just use a bolt in competion tyre valve ?? like ian has but in link (doh whish id checked link first !!)

I assumed at first it would be used to vent any air or to de-pressurise the system before removing the lid or even to measure the pressure in the system. |
Pressurizing the coolant allows the boiling temperature to increase and in turn improves the cooling efficiency....we run our system at 1.7 bar....

That's very interesting to know. How do you pressurise it? Just with a simple air line? I assume it's like a simple tyre valve type fitting?

I remember that from my theory days at uni doing Mech Eng :D I assume then that the expansion tank is filled to half level (or where appropiate) and then pressurised with air? Do you set it to 1.7 bar by experiance or is it documented somwhere :) |

It's gone on for many years in motorsport...there are other benefits...elimination of localised boiling etc etc....... |
