Saph cos hyd lifters
I've just fitted a new set to my cos,do they take a while to settle in/fill with oil? Been for a quick blast and left it ticking over till fans came on and went off but they are still rattling.
not at all this wont make any difference , the lifters should be fine whether left in oil or not , they might take a while to settle in!!
just hope you used gen ford ones that all , i personally dont like the oe spec ones floating around which are very cheap

remove them with a valve lapping in sucker(not a magnet - as this may magnetise the top causing swarf/fillings to gather and will cause the cam lobes to wear out very quickly. also note the location of each tappet as it will be bedded in to the location it has come from.
leave them soaking upside down in a tub of degreaser (i used diesel and parafin mix) then with a pair of snipe nose pliers, holding then tappet upside at around 45 degrees down with the oil hole on the side pointing down aswell. grab the plunger in the bottom with the pliers and slowly but firmly push it in and out, this will force the old oil out of the hole form inside the tappet - mine looked like tar
do this several times and even do it with the tappet submerged in degreaser , you will notice that the plunger will work freeer and freeer to the point where when you pull it up it will drop back in under its own weight. leave out to dry overnight upsidedown and pump the bottom rapidly the next day to ensure no more oil/degreaser comes out the small hole. now leave them soaking in some new synthetic engine oil while pumping them in/out under the oil, leave them upside down in the oil for a day and repeat the nest day .
finally refit them by drooling new oil down the galleries and recesses where they fit in the head and put them back in the original locations. drool more new oil over the top and then refit the camshafts (and find 4 of the studs are actually stripped
and need helicoiling
) and time her up.
i wound the engine up on the starter for around 30 secs with the coil ht lead disconnected to get some oil pressure up. then reconnect and all was good - no more tappet noise
so this it seems is all that goes on them - they get all gummed up with old carbonated oil and cant pump up easilly -causing the tapperty noise when cold.

thtas what i thought - all it costs is your time , and the car laid up for a day or so - and if they dont work its not a bog job to fit new ones anyway.
Car has been laid up for three months while I build up the funds required to rebuild the head following a cam belt incident. Will be on axle stands for a while longer, so that gives me something to do in the mean time...
Can anyone give me an answer to this question, I have had new tappets fitted a few weeks ago on a 2wd cos & before this was done my car didn't smoke at all & never really used any oil but i have noticed now it smokes a bit after giving it some as you come off overrun & put your foot back down & also going to the pod today has gone from full oil mark on dipstick to just above minimum (285 miles) where as before i had them fitted i went to the pod & went on the strip all day long came home & the oil level hadn't moved. As my knowledge on engines is limited can anyone tell me if just changing the tappets could make it use more oil if their not sealing or whatever as the old ones must have obviously worn in with the head. also since changing them it sounds like their is still a top end tappet noise coming from 1 of them & doesn't go away for a good 3 to 4 mins when cold.
Cheers Simon.
