Default 1990 xr3i

hi im new on here, just on with buying a h reg xr3i, the fella im buying it from says its got a missfire due to needing a new octane adjuster? he showed me it and said it plugs into the wiring harness and then needs to go on a computer to reset the memory of the fuel system, can anyone shed any light on this, having driven nothing but capris for years this is new to me, i went into my local ford dealer and they didnt know what i was talking about, any help much appreciated, thanks

LOL is all I have to say...

Could be loads of things on a 3i.... none of them particularly expensive to fix but you need to have a methodical approach.

most of the vauxhals had octane plugs, used to put the highest spec one in you could find. Must be an efi xr3i on that age, some did have octane plugs. Not sure this would cause a missfire though, even if it was unpluged. I would be looking at leads and correctly gapped new plugs, as everything else on that particular edis ignition system is pretty bulletproof (assuming it is efi, with edis4 wasted spark) be interesting to see a pic of what he think is to blame though, nothing of this nature would put me off buying the car though.

Octane plug doesn't need the compy to be hooked up, it simply plugs in, ecu says hello and adjusts accordingly.
Octane plug is not going to be the cause of a misfire though.

The none turbo cvh's always tend to tick over a bit more lumpy compaired to the turbos. My 3i had a really bad miss fire at tick and I have replaced everything I can but still won't over smooth. I have learnt to live with it but if it is really bad start with a service, if that does not sort it check the leads. Get the mixture adjusted, any garage that does mot's can do it for about £20. If it still does it the look at the MAP sensor, idle control valve, crank sensor, find out the last time the belt was changed as the timing could be out slightly, the fuel pressur regulator may need adjusting and a decent garage should be able to do that. Another possible is the fuel pump, mine was running really rough just before the pump died.
