Hi guys dont really know much about cooling systems but hey heres what happening.

I have a 1996 (mk6) ford escort 1.8 lx (115ps spec) temp gauge goes right up to the red tbh i havnt let it go into the red yet but the engine seems really hot so i think the gauge is correct.

Im not sure what would cause this. The fan just doesnt turn on unless i put the aircon on then its on permanently.

At first i thort it might be a coolant temp sensor but im not sure but im sure the gauge would be incorrect if that was the case.

so i really dont know what it might be. so any help would be much apprieciated.

 

I'd try changing the water temp sender first.

 

You need to establish, if the engine is getting that hot or the reading is wrong, a stuck thermostat could make it that hot, but the fans should still come on before then.
Most likely on yours they are ecu controlled, and don't use a seperate switch for the fans.
On balance it is most likely a duff sender, bear in mind the gauge one and the ecu are two seperates senders(so do correct one).

ok well will get down the scrapy tomorrow and get me a new temp sensor. see if that fixes the problem. Will let you know. Ive been told if you take the connection off the sensor and bridge the conector it will turn the fan on constantly but doesnt seem to do anything.
But hey if ya gunna do a job worth doing properly thanks for your help guys will see what happens wid new sensor and let ya know.

 

DON't bridge this connection.
The sensor feeds the ecu, the ecu decides whether the fans need to be on, disconnecting the sensor should make the fans come on anyway, as it is the ecu default position.

Hi guys found another sensor on the radiator top hose apears to be dead. Tested coolant temp sensor its functioning correctly. Well tabetha sorry read your thread to late. I took this other sensor i found off bridged the conections and the fan switched on so im assuming the switch within this sensor is dead will replace tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks for the advice guys.

 

I just recently purchased a 1994 ford escort lx 1.9l and the car is overheating.

The Problem:
The owners before me ran a wire from the radiator wiring to the dash board. That wire connects to a switch. Bypassing the relay. The radiator fan is always on and working. Just today the fan died. Or at least i believe it died. I went to a junk yard to buy a fan to see if it solves the fan not working problem.

But i do not like the switch that they have on the dash board. Where is the radiator fan relay located at? And is it trouble to get to. If anyone can help me out i would greatly appreciate it. also if you could possibly post some pictures as to where the relay is located.

BTW there is no thermostat in the car. I just bought one of those to install today.

Hi guys sorted my problem that second sensor i found on the top hose was the problem all working correctly now. thanks for the help anyways guys cheers.

 

Interesting on a 1996 escort, that the fan is not ecu controlled!!

Yeh i thort it was a bit strange tbh but hey ho all is good now loving the car just need to do some work to it now any ideas how to make it faster?
