Default s1 electrical

i dont think ive ever used my series 1 at night until this last week and have noticed a problem with the electrics. when i turn my lights on to full beam the battery light comes on but only dim. if i use the indicators it comes on brighter. but if i was to say use the heated rear window it dosent come on any brighter.also the car splutters when coming on boost and it only does this with the lights on. could this be lack of power to the fuel pump perhaps?. the battery is new and so is the alternator. just wondering where is the best place to start checking the elctrics or has any body else had a similar problem

I would in the first instance check your charging rate, you want to see a minimum of 13volts at 2000 rpm with lights on.
The clean up all earths.

as tabetha said check to see how well your alternator is charging and also check the engine earth strap

Common to almost every Mk3 on the planet mate, and in 99.9% of cases nothing to worry about.

It stems from a bit of resistance in the ignition circuit, so therefore with high load on the ignition circuits with headlights etc, the charging voltage from the alternator is slightly higher than that in the ignition circuit, thus giving a difference in potential, resulting in a faintly glowing bulb. Most of the ones ive had do it, never caused any problems though.

You'll probably also notice pushing the brake pedal makes the warning lights on the instruments surge, as will the indicators flashing etc
