Probably is but purely for show as with the new rules coming out regarding tyre age in the MOT test you couldnt use it on the road.

When I had my MOT done the guy said that tyre age is going to be part of the test soon . All tyres have a date code on them which will be checked apparently.
I think I would be wary of fitting a tyre that has been sitting around for 30 years.

An unused D40 would be of interest really only to someone with a concours car for show, and should fetch decent money. I've just replaced D40's on my 3dr and the difference is like night & day. The old tyres had no grip whatsoever even in the dry, and were bordering on outright dangerous when there was even a hint of dampness on the road.
Thinking about it, I might even know someone who's after one.

Your car still had its original 30 year old Dunlop D40 tyres on it? Amazing they have lasted so long.

They weren't the 'originals' but were purchased around 1990/91 when you could still buy them new. The car's only done 53k miles so they don't see much action which is why they've lasted so long, but I thought as I'd just had all the wheels refurbed, I'd stick some new ones on.
Annoyingly, Dunlop don't make tyres in 205/50/15 anymore so had to replace them with Continentals

I paid £250 for an unused sapphire d40 tyre and wheel not long ago.
I wanted it and had been looking a while.

That's a new one on me and I'm an mot tester. Don't think I've had any special notices through about it. I'll have to check!

An unused wheel on its own is gonna set you back at least £150, any day of the week.
