Default Magnex exhaust best for 2wd saff?

So I've been reading through all sorts of old threads on exhausts as I want a new one for mine.

My car is pretty standard and will never be modded to have big power. The current SS exhaust is pretty tatty and has been patched several times as it constantly catches on speed bumps - this is the main reason for changing.

I'm thinking the Magnex system will be best for me as it follows the same pattern as the original and should sit up higher (as I understand) but I quite like the idea of a Mongoose system, especially as folk tend to rave about it. The Mongoose looks simpler and more free flowing. Does anyone have the Mongoose on a slightly lowered saff and does the exhaust constantly hit on everything?

Any help appreciated.

I had a Mongoose on mine and it constantly scraped on everything. Swapped it for a Magnex about 5 years ago and damn glad I did.
It's quieter, fits better, looks neater, it's less tiring on a long run (no monotonous drone), and sounds good when you give it the beans.

I have a mongoose on my 4x4. It doesn't catch often, but there are hardly ever more than 2 people in the car. But I regret getting the mongoose as the noise is really driving me crazy on long runs on the motorway, i'd rather have the magnex.

Cheers bigdel, just the kind of feedback I need to confirm that it is the Mongoose I need then

Here in Edinburgh the speed bumps and bumps are everywhere and there are currently roads I can't drive down near where I live as I know my exhaust will catch...

I think I was worried that the Magnex would be too quiet as I quite like a cheeky exhaust note (other car is a C63) but I don't want a chavy drone like the corsa brigade.

Aren't those magnex systems that follow the original twin pipe route that you can buy brand new a new design? I don't remember them from years ago?

Last time i looked they cost about 700 quid too!

I'd like to change the exhaust on mine too but don't know what to get really

Magnex went out of business years back, but Collins Performance (I think) bought the patterns and started remanufacturing them.
Mines one of the original ones, I paid £140 for it off a guy in South Wales about 5 years ago. He had it on his 3dr a few years earlier and took it off before he sold it, so was just sitting in his garage. Dunno what the quality on the new ones is like, but this one's really well made and fits a treat

My 2wd Saff is lowered and the S/S centre box scraping on speed bumps etc was a pain so years ago I had a custom made oval shaped S/steel box made. It still allows a good flow but sits up nice and high and never scrapes on anything. I have recently had a new one exactly the same made by Maniflow in Salisbury. It wasnt cheap but is very high quality and fits really well. The rest of the S/Steel exhaust is not a problem. All the big bore aftermarket S/Steel exhausts all have a round centre box which is to big.

I have the magnex system on mine which is one of the originals. I'm on coilovers and the car sits a little to low at the moment but the exhaust has never scraped.
Only thing I would change about it is the volume. It's very quiet which is great but just that little bit more noise would be fantastic.
Considered chopping the centre boxes out but don't want to end up regretting it and it becoming loud.

My exhaust is quite loud but not so loud as to be annoying. I think there has been a few people who have cut out the centre box but regretted it afterwards.

A friend of mine has suggested he could make something up for me because as you say, it is just the middle box that catches and the rest of my exhaust is fine really. I'll check out that company.

They are on the Churchfields Industrial Estate and specialise in making exhaust manifolds and exhaust systems for all sorts of classic cars like MGB .Mini Coopers, Triumph etc They make everything themselves on site and they took a lot of time with mine to get it spot on.
The guys at Tremona garage in Southampton were very impressed with the work.

Plenty of great advice on here as always, the car has been in my parents garage since the day after Simply Ford and I'm already counting down the days before I can next get down. Once I've brought the car back up to Scotland I'll make a decision.

After a small search stainless cossie exhausts seem to be thin on the ground these days? Think ive decided i want a magnex for mine.

I'm half tempted to just buy one of those new systems that follows the original twin pipe setup

3" or 4" tailpipe?

I had the backbox pipe cut to length and the rolled end cut off. It makes the 3inch look slightly smaller in diameter along with looking less bulky/cleaner look.

Cheers.

I can only confirm what's allready been told.

Had the Mongoose on my other 2wd Sapphire that was a little bit lowered and it scraped on every speedbump or hole in the road. Now i have the Magnex and doesn't scrape anymore.

Fits perfect ;

Looks fine enough ;

I assume thats one of those new style magnex systems being twin pipes underneath?

Is that the 3" tailpipe version you have? It looks good.

How loud is it compared to the mongoose?

It was DC Performance that I was looking at ordering from too

https://www.dcperformance.co.uk/upra...rd/sierra.html

The route it takes looks very similar to standard exhaust and fingers crossed it won't catch on every bloody speed bump as it sits up higher. Only 2 weeks until I bring by car back up the road - looking forward to the 500 mile journey.

Oh and it would be 3in I'd go for too - I've got standard wheels and a 4in would look a bit out of place with the rest of the car standard looking.

Many saphs run 3.5" tail pipe which seems to suit the car best.

Well finally got a Magnex and got it fitted to the car. First off DC Performance said they couldn’t get one then put their prices up online the following day... managed to source from a company via eBay (who also increased their advertised price the day after I ordered).

Zorst came, my mechanic grumbled and swore a lot and ended up having to trim bits and open one pipe up. Anyway, he said the fitting was gash but once fettled it looks and sounds great. Not had chance to drive the car yet though...

Anyway, just be aware it might not bolt straight on but worth the effort and I sold my old exhaust on eBay too.

I have found with quite a few " made to easily fit " modifications over the years they do need fettling to make them fit properly.

My magnet fitsfine,my car came with a new mongoose system which was a piece of shit, the old style is far far better made than the blueflame made/Collins supplied system.
My only 2 complaints with the magnet is I dislike rolled in backboxes and mine isn’t properly welded where the 2 pipes merge into 1 so soot gets sprayed onto the diff.
2 things I’ll be sorting before it goes back together.

Always liked a 4inch straight cut on mine. I’m going custom system 3 inch turbo back. Definitely having same tail pipe again.

Why a custom system James if staying 3 inch diameter?

Cheers Paul

Sure it’s 3 inch long time since I discussed it with mark. If you follow m.a.d on Facebook there’s an interesting bit on so called off the shelf performance exhaust systems and how the diameter decreases a lot in the box’s

Im getting a custom made job 3" system from the turbo back on my 3 door replica, I hate how all the off the shelf systems look on them, the tail pipes stick out too much as they are too long, most hang down too low as well so can get it tucked up as high as possible
