For the DIY mechanic, working on a drive way?

found this which for £90 seems like it could be worth the outlay, if only ever for occasional use.

Anyone had any experiance using this type of thing

( im getting older, weaker and lasy these days )

 

They arent perfect, and as with most scissors n take a fair bit of effort from the lowest positions.

But a very worthwhile too.

Equally worthwhile is a proper jack to get adequate height to use it an suitable axle stands to ensure car is safe at any height.

 

I have one of those and it is not great, the weight overcome it and the bolts come loose. I found that with a ratchet you didn't have enough torque to lift it at all...

I then Bought one 4 times the price and still not great, much better but the gearbox still wanted to roll off, the one Ed China used looks great but expensive and too tall unless car is well up in the air.

 

If you can be bothered to drive from Essex to SURREY you can borrow my hydraulic one as is pretty good but you would need to bring it back after so don't know if worth the hassle for you.

 

I've had mine for over 15 years and never had any faults or anything come loose. Certainly no chance of weight dropping mine. I've had my heavy T56 on it, and also rammed against the body of the car without worry.

And yes at low heights it can be stiff....just use a longer ratchet lol.

Securing the box to it can be an issue, but that's trial and error as every box/shape will be different. Once inside the tunnel area it cant really go anywhere though

 

Maybe the ones from 15yrs ago were better than my new one?

Mine didn't drop, just wouldn't move even with 500 nm windy gun on it.

Hydraulic was a doddle but if gearbox Jams the whole car lifts off the ramps.

 

I've got one and used it a few times, handled the 722.6 gearbox on my e class without much drama, it is a bit flimsy and you do have to man handle it a bit but there is no chance I'd of got the box back on without it.

I find usually you can't get the car high enough to get the box under on the jack then struggle like a bastard getting back onto the jack under the car

Done a zafira gsi with it too and was great, strap is prettty useless though use another strap and bin the one on it off if needs be.

 

Ok seems its better than my current trolley jack and wood situation!

Caddyshack cheers for the offer, but at 12mpg, probably not far off buying one. And im sure ill be changing the odd box now and then so will be a handy tool to have.


Oh its a merc e class 722.3 box that weighs a lot. Seems a lot more than a cossie 4x4 box

 

i think you can buy that as an adapter separate for a jack that you add on and use as gearbox jack

 

No idea...it might even be older. Not sure when I bought it, but it'd certainly be no less than 15yrs, but could be 20 ! lol But mine is pretty heavy and very sturdy, Draper.

And I wouldnt even attempt to use any sort of gun on it to move it. If it's an impact gun, they're absolutely not designed for that, nor is the lift.

 

Yea I've just used a normal 1/2" ratchet without issues on mine.

 

Problem with draper now is it's all built in China. I have some draper stuff from 15-20 years or more old and it's good sturdy stuff, all the new stuff I've got is like it's made of chocolate and horrible to use.

 

I was thinking the same regarding an impact gun, would more than likely sheer something off than apply actual rotating force.

 

I was just trying to make the point that the drive wouldn't turn with weight on, not suggesting that is the method to operate it. My one is shocking and no longer use it, clearly the older ones may be better. I would happily give my one away if anyone wants it, I think it is pap.

 

I've had the Merc auto box with TC on mine and it isn't even 2 years old, wound up fine on a normal sized 1/2" ratchet.

 

Ive got one at my work. We use them for taking doors off the vans.

 

IMO well worth the money, 30mins with abit of jiggling about and the box is back on, with no, cuts, bruises or pulled mussles

Only issue i had was waited until the kids were in bed and it had cooled down outside , so got bitten alive by mosseys


oh using a normal rachet fine, as too noisey to use a air one past 9pm

 

Told ya strap is utterly pointless though isn't it, unless you was working on a 1.0 mk2 fiesta or something where you can walk round in the engine bay
ive just used a strap on its own in the past

 

Yeah straps pointless as gets in the way when putting the box back up
