Propshaft oil leak
Hi,
No I'm not kidding, lol
The seal on the back of my 3dr gearbox is bone dry the oil is leaking from the first uj.
I'm presuming is the cap in the end of the sleeve leaking. Any one else had this and how did you fix it please?
Cheers,
Gavin

Can you not just swap out the oil seal? Is there any vibration? My drivers side mount went and cause a vibration, this made the oil seal on the transfer box weep

Hi,
The seal is dry no trace of oil.
it's coming from the inside of the UJ, it looks like there's a blanking cap on the end of the splined sleeve that goes into the box and I presume that is the leak...
Cheers,
Gavin

Can you get a pic up? I assume you are talking about the splined slider that goes in to the transfer case for the front prop? There is an oil seal at the front where the splined end goes in. The UJ will not have any grease or oil to speak of as it is just an open part on the Propshaft. There shouldn't be much more than a copper slip amount of grease on the splines. I cannot think of anywhere else where the oil could come from other than that oil seal.

I had an oil leak from the back of my gearbox a while back, put a new seal in the back of the box and it was still the same, weeping oil.
Took it all apart again and turns out the actual propshaft had cracked half of the way round where it slides into the box!
Got hold of another prop and all was good
Cheers Paul

Hi,
@ Caddy ... No for two reasons, mines 2WD and the leak isn't from the seal.
@ Paul ... That's a worry but my leak is a little further to the rear, inside the UJ
Not been out to the garage yet to get a pic....
Cheers,
Gavin

That UJ doesnt contain any oil to speak of, only a light mist of lubricant on the bearing perhaps. I would clean it off and see if it is oil somehow making its way out of the box. If it is then the rear seal would need replacing. As the metal around the box look very dry I doubt that oil seal is leaking but I suppose it could be making its way along the shaft out of the box.
If you pull that shaft out of the gearbox on a 2wd box do you lose all the gearbox oil?

Hi,
You'll lose some but not all. I wanted to change the oil but didn't want to until the leak is sorted/do both at once.
It doesn't leave a puddle but you can see in the pics where its added rust protection to the floor, lol.
Cheers,
Gavin

I would pull out the shaft and see what the seal looks like without the prop in there. Maybe get a replacement seal ready. Should be an easy swap
