Default Baffled/gated big capacity sumps.

Ok, having just destroyed my engine at the weekend from what would appear to have been picking up air pockets from excessive hard cornering, I think I need to look at doing something with the sump.

I had thought I had seen a very very brief flicker of the oil light out of the corner of my eye (really dim for less than a seond) several times and then threw it round a corner hard and it came on fully. Stopped abruptly as you would and checked the oil level. The level was over not quite half way between min and max.

It would seem that i am carrying quite a lot of cornering speed and the pick up pipe isn't staying fully submerged.

Now this is on my S1 turbo and unfortunately, has cost me a set of Farndon H section con rods, crank and bearings etc.... I'm just looking for ideas on how to create a sump for the CVH in a similar fashion to how it has been done on the YB.

Does anyone already make such an item? I know Martin @ Reyland can do a baffled YB sump for example.

Any ideas and help would be much appreciated.

bit unlucky that daz, i can see that the gate around the sump being too much of a problem really, and as for makinging it large capacity would be easy, though getting to anything above the sump on the engine might be a pain with it fitted, get a couple os steel sumps and cut them up and just mock some tin against it to do some tests with hinged gates.

Tim, this was just hard road driving but I do corner pretty hard. Even with a full sump of oil I could get the light to flicker on hard cornering if I was shifting. The car can still go round corners faster than it's driver! There has been several events leading upto the death of the crank which make me believe it to have been oil starvation due to surging oil and air pockets.

Mark, do you recon I'd be better with a simple baffle on a big capacity sump rather than a gated affair?

Got to do something as I can't keep throwing a crank and rods in it!

with how your car should handle daz, i would say you need to be messing with gates, especially if you are going to be holding long corners for a while, as the cvh sump isnt that big to begin with, so a baffle would only hold that small amount of oil for a set period around the pick up, you have to be able to allow the area around the baffles to use the oil in the rest of the sump so it has to bleed into and out of the baffle.
I would look at gates.

I think Doug (garage19) has done gated and baffled sumps for Zetecs before, not sure about CVH`s, might be worth a PM though.

Thanks Mark. I'll look into what space I have around the sump and then work from there.

Having been under it tonight preparing the engine for removal, there is marginal room to the rear of the sump due to a drive shaft. Forwards of the sump there is quite a bit of room and I could extend the sump towards the gear box slightly.

Alternator removal doesn't look easy once a big CC sump is on there.

Gaz, I see no point in putting the engine back in on the current standard turbo when I have the GT sat in my bedroom somewhere amongst the junk!

Junk consists of a snap on fridge, an 8 bar fuel pump, plug leads, shoes, boots, clothes, engine sensors, injectors and probably a few other bits and pieces I have forgotten. I only store shit in my room and sleep there!
