Cossie YB into my race car project*update RR print out!* 02/4/11

Should have started this thread earlier but I will back date it from the start to where I am now

After using the car this year in the northern saloons it became obvious to me that my car just wasn't fast enough (any racer will tell you that no matter how fast there car is! lol)

so I decided over this winter to collect everything I need to put a Cossie YB turbo motor in to give it some extra go..had myself a huge shopping list of parts needed

picked the engine up, seems ok so far, going to keep the late style power steering alternator set up as I have the pipes for this already,

it came with a 2wd exhaust manifold which I have removed as I'm not using it so I took the opportunity to try my 4x4 manifold on with the t34 I will be using.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/P8290076.jpg

decided to take the crank out and polish or regrind as required with new big and main bearings

good luck steve,i thought the 2wd ex manifold was better flowing though?

what spec you going after old bean

The Youth. 12-12-2010 07:12 PM

when stripping the engine I found a few faults such as the badly fitted inlet manifold gasket!! it also had a sump gasket fitted

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/PA030095.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/PA030097.jpg

got myself a paddle clutch

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/PA260127.jpg

Fitted a quicksift knuckle to the gearstick and alloy bushes int othe cradle

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/PB240308.jpg

Got my engine back from my engine builder AMAC in northallerton a propper old school competition engine specialist, they have polished the crank which is std/std balanced it along with the flywheel (which they have also lightened and machined) and the clutch cover
they then refitted the Crank for me just so I know it's right!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/PA260129.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...PC100325-1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/PC100324.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/PC100323.jpg

I then set about refitting the rest of the engine together complete with a new oil pump and gated baffle for the sump which is currently away having an oil return welded in as I am going to be breathing from both sides of the block and returning to the sump below the oil level

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...umpbaffle1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/PB240306.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...t/PC110329.jpg

To bring it up to date today I got my inlet manifold fitted and sorted out the breather connections the turbo side pipe is fitted with industrial pipe insulation to prevent the heat from the manifold burning it, also finished off the water pipe mods as im not using a heater in the car I used a 2wd solid pipe turned round to run across the top of the exhaust manifold this meets up neatly with the pipe from the oil modine a moment of genius if I say so myself

T34.48 light blues so around 360 bhp, don't any anymore as thats about it for the transmission specially as it is a race car so isn't going to get an easy time of it! lol

At that power level the 4wd manifold will be fine

RONNIE AMIS 12-12-2010 08:09 PM

looking good mate, will keep an eye on this now,

when does your season start?

BRAM 12-12-2010 08:17 PM

Seen your car at croft before and it seemed to go quite well so should be great with the yb in it!!

How are you getting on in the northern saloons? Would love to do something like that might start with a few trackdays first.

Are you still a member of the cumbria group?
I came to a few meets before but took my car off the road so cant get there now, when i get my car back out i might pop to some.

Cheers Bram

The Youth. 12-12-2010 08:50 PM

cheers ronnie, season starts in late april so I'm doing ok for time at the mo..that will no doubt change tho lol

Bram, Cleveland group ;-)
yes m8 still a member, you don't need your car on the road to come to the meetings, get yourself along m8
as for my first season I finished 3rd in class and 13th overall, which is far better than I was expecting

steve

Dicko&Vacant 12-12-2010 08:54 PM

Nash 12-12-2010 09:50 PM

Will you have to move up a class with upgrading the power at all?

What were the sort of costs involved in you first season with getting the car to comply with the regs etc, PM me is needs be.

lee2cossies 12-12-2010 10:39 PM

Very nice project! Iv always fancied an xr4x4 with a yb. The 24v's are brilliant engines but just lacking that bit more oomph, should be very competitive now.

I stay in class B Treaded tyres (over 2000cc as the car is now 3400cc with the 70% loading for the turbo)

typical prices for first timers this is about what I paid (I got my medical done on the cheap tho)

go racing pack £60
ards test £275
medical £100
National B licence £51
safety gear, suit ,helmet, boots, gloves, £700
transponder £250 (secondhand) £350 new
championship entry £115
each race weekend entry fee £280
car preps about 2k(to convert from track car to race car) inc tyres at £450 for 4 toyo R888 not to mention many hours of work!

The set up is a late 4x4 / esc cos one I chose to go this way as the bracket for this set up came with the engine and I already had all the power steering pipes for this set up, made it all very easy and cheaper to build

Yes m8 that was me!
Offside engine mount failed causing the offside front inner cv joint to come apart at 80 mph... Went with big bang and scared the shite out of me and my passenger!
Had a spare tho so got back out again

good progress, puts my effort to get the ibiza running again to shame lol

can see the blue beast lurking in the back ground

The Youth. 08-01-2011 11:19 PM

Had a busy day today with plenty of new parts arriving, firstly the other day my msd chip and -34 arrived aswell as my front diff strengthening plate and today I picked up my cambelt cover and hydraulic clutch, then tonight I managed to spend a few hours in the garage and fitted the plate to the front diff, then fitted the diff to the engine.
At the unit the other day I removed the fuel pump and carrier and tonight after sorting the diff I set about making the new pump and filter fit, being an xr4x4 the filter isn't in the normal cossie position next to the pump so I made a bracket up and mocked up the new set up using my 044 pump that I will be using.

I then cleaned up and painted the pump carrier with some smoothrite to tidy it up a bit, tommorow I will fit the clutch cylinder to the gearbox
steve

The Youth. 09-01-2011 09:51 PM

Got a couple more hours in the garage tonight and re assmbled the fuel pump cradle after painting it and fitted the slave cylinder to the gearbox.
