F402AEL - Red Series Two Resto
Evening all,
Had this Radiant Red ERST for nearly 3 months, have had it stored for the last 2, been working on it a week or so now. Internet problems have stopped me starting a thread, but that's all sorted now! Quite a fair bit of history came with this car, looks like its been owned by a few unloving people and left to become a bit of shed. Was once owned by a Swindon RS club member, dunno if they use PF or not? If you did once own it, then some history would be appreciated! Original Spec was: Chip (of some sort?) Stage 2 T3 Hybrid (Bearings gone) Pace FMIC K&N Scorpion exhaust Baileys D/V Samco's Koni adjustable's Oil pressure gauge (not even plumbed in) Boost and a vacuum gauge? Not really sure on that one lol The engine MIGHT have been forged, but no paperwork to back it up, so don't really know. Basically the bodywork is fairly decent, one holed arch and slight bubbling here and there. Not the worse I've seen, but the underneath always hides some surprises!! I know these pics aren't the greatest of quality (couldn't find my camera charger), the next lot will be a shitload better. Please keep in mind this around a weeks worth of pics in a one! http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0032.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0033.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0034.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0035.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0038.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0039.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0040.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0041.jpg Got a slight crack on my inner wing, battery tray has been replaced at some stage too. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0042.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0043.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0044.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0045.jpg Original wiring loom has seen better days, has atleast two alarms wired in at some stage, not the greatest of wiring either, alot of twist connections. On the hunt at the moment for a replacement. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0047.jpg Exterior pics, some of the nasty areas... http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0048.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0049.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0051.jpg Surprisingly the front slam panel and rear quarters are spot on, usually where the worst rot hides out! http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0052.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0052.jpg Spare wheel well is solid too, absolute bonus. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0055.jpg Took forever to get this filler cap off, the key I was given was snapped in the lock. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0056.jpg Only to find... http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0058.jpg Getting there... http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0059.jpg Knocked up a roll-over jig, used some old right angled iron fence posts, the weight of them is unreal, probably a slight overkill for an Escort! http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0062.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0066.jpg The bracket for the rear took a good few hours to cut and weld, but it fits the rear perfectly. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0067.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0072.jpg Interior out. Passenger and driver seat had been swapped over. The drivers is got the usual worn and saggy bolsters. Going to need a replacement or a re-trim. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0070.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0071.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0073.jpg And finally up, only to reveal a fair amount of graft underneath! http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0074.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0075.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0076.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0078.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0080.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0081.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0082.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Photo0083.jpg The last picture is just rust penetration. A lot of work still to do. Started buying parts ages ago. Plans are to keep it as standard looking on the outside with some nice mods hidden away. Already got Cossie front and rear brakes to go on with braided lines and polybushes. Engine wise, I bought bigryrs's engine from his xr2 Turbo. That's on my engine stand waiting for a clean-up, head gasket, timing belt etc. Trying my hardest to keep the engine as standard looking as possible, as the car came with chrome that I'm not interested in. Should hopefully make good power though. Nearer completion I will be on the look out for some original Turbine alloys. At the moment the car has 90% of its underseal removed, just waiting on some time to attack the welding. Thanks for reading! More pictures on the way. Ryan |
Good looking project ,welcome to pf
|
great project, well done for getting stuck in
|
You don't hang about do you  Fair play!
Keep us updated! :top: |

Right, some more pictures from today, that are hopefully better quality.
This is how the underneath stands at the moment. Just received my new outer sills today, so can get moving with the welding shortly. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1011.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1012.jpg Starting to gather a large amount of dust. New engine waiting on stand. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1015.jpg I made a start on tidying up the engine. My top end gasket set, timing belt, fan belt and sump gasket are here. Still waiting on core plugs and a tensioner from Burtons. Few other gaskets should be here from Ford on Friday if not Monday. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1014.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1042.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1053.jpg This is the block after two coats of Nitromores and a good scrub with petrol. Took a good 2 hours to remove two different colours of paint. Was once a light blue then black. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1062.jpg A closer look at the internals and I'm not sure that the previous owner of the xr2 Turbo was telling the whole truth in his description. Meant to have a steel crank, steel rods and forged pistons. Pistons are Acralites by the looks of it, but everything else looks standard to me. Although the rods have had the cast marks ground off them? I know that's meant to help stop cracks forming. The crown of the pistons also have marks cut out so the valves don't collide, but it looks like a home job :( http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1062.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1060.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1052.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1051.jpg Cleaned a lot of parts up too like the inlet, exhaust manifold, turbo and crossover pipe. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1032.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1027.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1037.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1039.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1041.jpg Just got skim the faces to get them smooth and free of paint. Thats about it for now! Unbelievable how manky some of the stuff was and the length of time to clean them. Ryan |
Damn good progress there mate :top:
|
good progress, looks like them pistons have had a grinder to em!!
|
Top work there fella, and welcome to pf and keep the piccys coming
|
Some more pics from yesterday, was on the drink last night so didnt do anything today.
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1089.jpg Stripped my head down to get rid of all the carbon. This should be a stage 3 head, so bigger valves. Took it to my work to put it in the degreasing cabinet. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1090.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1091.jpg Still got abit more cleaning to do. Cant put my springs back in because I have the wrong stem oil seals. So had to phone Burton and get some on order, maybe be here Monday. Also waiting on some Head Bolts that should be at my work today. Here is the difference in the seals. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...o/DSCF1088.jpg You can see the originals have the seal integrated into the spring platform, hence the name 'VALVE STEM OIL SEAL WITH INTEGRAL SPRING PLATFORM'. Pretty annoyed having to wait, but nothing I can do. Painted my block too, but dont seem to have took a picture. |

Oh and its not the guys fault I bought it off, was the previous who told some porkies about the spec |
It's unfortunate that there are so many cowboy DIYers out there who get away with waffling shit to people for the sake of a few quid. Only thing is there's not many people that would let you strip down an engine to check it before you buy it from them!! Glad you're nearby as it seems you know your stuff mate!!
|
I know mate, buts its one of those things. Like buying a car with no MOT, dont know the damage till its judgement day :(

Lol at Judgement Day! My Golf is due an MOT end of January, think I'll get shot of it before it ends up in the scrappies! I'm sure you'll make it good though. |

Looks good mate, shame about the engine! although the block looks interesting... looks like it has had liners fitted?
I would change the rods if it were me mate, looks like he has only rounded the caps too not the rod lol, also its got standard bolts :( not the arps you would expect had it been built properly. The caps could have had material removed to balance them.... Rob, |
Wish I had a rollover for mine. Spent the last 3 months underneath mine on a cold floor lol. Looking good mate. Get her ready for summer. Gonna be a minter. Good luck

Good work so far, seems a fair few series2's are being done at moment. |
Small update,
Welding has well and truely begun now the snow has left us. Nothing much to take pictures of as I'm waiting on some floor panels to arrive from rsturbos.com Ive manage to source some headbolts for the engine, they are here, but I'm still waiting on the head gasket to arrive then the final assembly can begin. Pictures later this weekend! |
I'm likin this away to start my restoration on my 90 spec. Looks to be in the about the same condition as yours will keep an eye on this. Hopefully get my thread started soon too. Keep it up!

looking well mate
|
Cracking work mate. Those wheels are sitting pretty under my arches just now but they're coming with me to college on Monday for a refurb! Who's spraying your car when it's done?
|
My wheels havent moved since I got them off you bud, keep meaning to take them into work and get the tyres off so I can work on them at lunchtime etc.
Im gonna be spraying the underneath red whilst its on the jig. The when its rolling again I will move it to another location to spray the outside myself. Somewhere less dusty. Bought a new spray gun a few months ago that im itching to use! Devilbiss GTi Pro. |
Devilbiss GTi Pro Rob, |
Ive kept them standard for the time being, I've got another block here that Im tempted to rebuild, but for now, that engine will go in to get it moving again. But I couldnt not refit it not cleaned up, would annoy me everytime I seen it.
|
how ya gettin on bud?:DD:
|
Nice project.Nice to see another old ford been cared for.
|
Nice work keep it up :top:
