Fridays update -

this week with little time after work, ive removed the seat again, removed the rest of the sound deadening cleaned that up, painted over all the welds inside the car with 2 coats of hammerite and painted the front footwells, cleaned all the filings off the bumpers skirts, hoovered all the car out then refitted the seats again -

Saturdays update -

Head gaskets gone lots of thick brown sludge in the top of the header tank and all over the cap, no mayo on the dipstick or the oil filler cap tho... heaters not quite getting upto temp, water temp on gauge is on the dash is normal tho, and oil temp still seems silly high for a standard engine when kicking its head in considering too and i have mocal 13row oil cooler too...

piece of ****, 80quid engine to be expected really lol

so went shopping lol...

10l of 5w40 fully sythentic and CVH oil filter -

Nylock nuts for the cage -

...which i replaced yesturday and painted over all the weldss underneath the car, i protected the threads on the bolts sticking through underneath the car with a little bit of copper grease to stop **** sticking to them

whilst i had the paint out did the drums and the interior -

drained the coolant and oil and fitted the new oil filter, heres the nice coolant -

thats about it, going to get the head skimmed this week and wait on the order for the Blacktop steel headgasket and ARP rod bolts from Shawspeed ...

was thinking of setting the new rev limit to 7.5k and maybe take it back to Mikeanics to make sure its running spot on all over after raising the Compression Ratio slightly and re-doing the cam-timing and obv. to map it from 6.9-7.5k...

unless, would it really be alirght!?

last thing i want is it to run really rich or really lean top end specially how often this car's up there lol

also gave the interior its 2nd coat of hammer****e too so thats done with, will fit the seats tuesday once its had a good few days to dry!

Removed the starter motor and loosened all the sump bolts ready for the sump to be removed when i get the ARP rod bolts.

Just about made it in time to pick the head up before after work then got caught in mega traffic on way back from there, had 6 thou skimmed off it -

gonna swill it down with the hot tap hose tmoz along with flush out the heater matrix and the coolant hoses.

interior floor had dried and came out pretty well after 2 coats of hammerite -

once its all back togther it'll have had new/replaced -

-Skimmed Cylinder head by 6 thou,
-Blacktop Steel Multilayer head gasket (45thou thinner than a standard silvertop item),
-5w40 fully sythetic oil and new CVH oil filter
-New genuine head bolts,
-ARP heavy duty Rod bolts
-2l of anti-freeze.

then will be taking it to mikeanics HOPEFULLY next week

going to set the rev limit to 7.5k on standard cams so i have 6-700rpm in the peak power rather than changing at the limiter at 6.9k as i was doing before and dont fancy revving higher than that without ARPs last thing i was is to damage anything, specially as my car spends most of its running life right at the top end of the revs

limiter removed!? what if you down change too quickly and why remove it at all dangerous going over 7k on standard rod bolts, id rather be safe than sorry hence why im fitting ARP's now and ive never revved this engine over 6.9k

Earlier i attached the garden hose to the hot tap and blasted it all before for a good 5 mins, then flushed out the heater matix for another good 5 mins to make sure all the **** was out.

Then fitted the bodies and cam belt tensioner, and put all the tappets back in in order all ready to re-fit the head Friday if the bolts and gasket do arrive with Shawspeed tmoz

ARPs arrived today, will pick them up from the post office tmoz on way home from work

Picked up the ARPs up on way home from work yesturday the nipped to Shawspeed to collect the Genuine Ford head bolts and head gasket, because i asked Jon to get me a Blacktop gasket he asked for a ST170 gasket, which is not quite as thin as a normal 2.0l Blacktop but still 28thou thinner than a standard silvertop gasket, so still going to have my Compression Ratio raised by a nice 34thou...

cleaned the face of the block, then fitted the gasket, then head bolts, then throttle cable, then fuel lines, then header tank, then coil pack, then thermostat housing then radiator -

head bolts torqued then angle tighetend, cams in, cam carriers torqued up as to haynes manual too... advanced the cams slightly :P..

ARPs fitted -

ARP bolt on the left -

fitted -

torqued up to 34nm as to ARP website

then sump, exhaust, starter and alternator back on... oil in and 5l of water... then connetced the battery...

then started it all sweet as a nut sounds well, got it all upto temp...

then noticed a leak from here where i think ive overtightened the jubilee clip -

so out of this pile -

Name: IMG_0918.jpg

i rigged it all up -

also when i had to drain the coolant, theres still oil in the coolant , no where near as bad as what it was but still in there, maybe just the shit thats been stuck in the bottom end as obviously i havnt flushed that out... so when i piped them coolant hoses up i just topped it up again with water, going to drive the car later kick its head in see if theres any signs of sludge on the filler cap again and see if the oil in the coolant gets worse etc

as for the map, if anything seems to be smoother than what it was, specially from cold when we first started it up lol

still will be going to mikeanics to get it checked out, cold map 100% sorted and map the top end and raise the limiter to 7500rpm

wrong!...

it seemed to be better and started easy, but when i came to drive it on tuesday night it took ages to start, it feels slower and the induction noise is so much different to how it was so the map must be quite a way out so...

Dropping the car off at Mikeanics at 10am tomorrow morning, then hes going to sort the cold map first thing monday then sort the rest of the map and map the top end from 6900rpm to the new rev limit of 7500rpm, cant wait to get it back!

also ordered some Eibach adjustable camber bolts the other day, they arrived yesturday, will fit them next week and get it booked back in to get all aligned again hopefully egt eh camber set to -2.5degrees, just looking around for some proper 10mm spacers for the front atm before i get it booked back in.

looking good mate, did you do the valve stem seals when you had the head in bits or were they recently done? not sure having a rev limmiter will stop you over revving on a downshift TBH as you are mechanically overspeeding the engine, regardless of throttle position/ig/fueling.

nope not touched them stem seals not needed to as it runs awesome

nah downshifting revs will always go over but i aint gonna throw it into 2nd at 90 lol, what made you ask that anyways lol?

Dropped the car off at Mikeanics yday...

coolant temp on the dash sat at the middle all the way there which is good, used to sit around 3/4 on the gauge on the dash now it seems right also the heater gets right upto temp really warm where as before it was luke warm...

maybe all the oil is just washing out the water ways in the block now, will drain it again when i get the car back on monday then will give it a good run see how it is, can't wait to get it back

New goodiess....

1800 s2 zetec engine, out of a escort GTI...
85k, recent clutch and cam belt
turned it over by hand and feels awesome/perfect/lots of compression
also came with loom ecu key
2.0TB
air filter and pipercross breather filter
escort top rad hose with fan switch

Name: IMG_0926.jpg
Views: 351

got it all for about half the price for whats its all worth and was only an hour away in Morecambe to collect it yesturday so win win

Plan is to fit rs1800/130ps spec cams
HO/2.0 Inlet manifold and injectors

then either sell it for more than i payed for it or keep hold of it and plunk it in the XR2 when i come to sell it so it'll be running a nice fuel injection zetec cos i dont want to be breaking the car and i'd rather keep my 2.0, jenveys, omex etc etc for my next ford... so we'll see

spent an hour taking all this off it earlier -

Name: IMG_0928.jpg

then the cambeklt cover and rocker cover ready to fit some RS1800/130ps Cams which i bought last night and shell be here mid next week -

cheers guys

top rad hose is off a mk3 zetec mate

well... got a call at 11am monday morning 'down 15bhp than before' , turned out the cam timing was farrrr to advanced...

so i left it with him to work his majic, went to collect it at 5pm, was just expecting 165-170bhp as i thought he was just gonna time the cams upto standard and thats aorund the power they usually make, well yeh i was wrong -

Mikeanics cam timing ftw thats all i can say happy is an understatement on how the car feels now, with advancing the cams to they're best and the extra 600rpm to hold power, doesnt half make a difference

Watching the tacho continue past 7000rpm is fun too haha

Purchased a Brand new Saxo VTS radiator off ebay last night, they are 35mm wider than the mk3 zetec rad, same height and same core and have a built in header tank which is the main reason ive gone for a VTS rad

with the lower rad hose outlet on the side on of the rad on the VTS rad and not on the rear like the zetec rad im gonna have to do some modyfying for it to fit so ive thought out what i need and want, a combo of escrot GTI and clio 172 lower rad hoses as the 172 hose has a 15mm take off which can feed my heater matirx, also ordered a 32mm pipe joiner to join both hoses of course...

all should be here tomorrow aswell as the Cams for the 1800

updates from 3 weeks ago onwards, alot to catch up on lol -

Bled the brakes yesturday, did them in the correct order... was LOADS of air in the offside rear, no air at all in the nearside rear, loads in the offside front and loads in the nearside front. Yet to test them because i planned to test the brakes whilst getting the car upto temp to bleed the cooling system so that'll have to wait...

before i removed the header tank, rad and the hoses i checked the header tank to see what we have after 4-5times flushing it out with water it seems to be 99% clean now -

all removed -

rad resting in place then noticed this -

i attatcked the bonnet with a hammer because the filler neck on the header tank is right where the inner skin lies so i flattened that and it shuts now

then spent around an hour trying to get my lower 172 and escort rad hoses to line up, but the 172 one just wouldnt fit, so went to a scrapyard and got a lower rad hose tee off a silvertop mondeo, got it to line up sound with the joiner and a 90degree bend off the escort hose, its all just resting in place atm becuase ran out of time yesturday, will get pics tmoz when i finish it all off

also the escort top rad hose with built in fan switch which came with the 1800 im using that too as theres no fan switch on the rad

also forgot this, when i did the headgasket i was able to remove the old coil pack and bracket off the head as i rounded the 7mm bolts that hold the coil; pack to the bracket, so on went the new one -

Just ordered 4m of black 6mm silicone vacuum tube off ebay for relocating my windscreen washer bottle to the boot, that should be here early next week

Picked the cams up for the 1800 last night -

and here are the cage brackets, 4 of each of these for either ends of the door bars me and f0xy are gonna make sometime next week before Oulton Park next saturday-

just waiting on the suppliers to have the 40mm CDS tube in!

Fiat 127 fan switch fitted -

cuts in at the perfect time so win... but when driving the temp is still the same must be a problem with thermostat or the block itself, so im going to test the thermostat later if its fine im just going to drill 4 5mm holes init then see how the temp is

had the Eibach Adjustable camber bolts fitted earlier and the alignment re-done...

3 4mm holes, coolant is mint now, sits at around 1/4ish on the gauge meaning the oils cooler too, ive also plumbed the heater matrix back in too as warm air is better than freezing air lol

the hose i ordered is slightly too large, and about 1m meter short than i wanted to reach where the tank is, go gonna or 5m of 4mm hose instead of the 4m of 6mm hose

Trackday at Oulton Park -

Car lasted all day which left me with a big smile on my face...

the last trackday the oil shot upto 140degrees after one hard lap and threw out 1/2 litre of oil out the breather after one lap too...

yesturday i managed 3-4 hard laps before my oil reached 120degrees so then i just did 1/2 lap cooling down the another 3 hard laps as didnt think it was worth the risk of letting it go much higer than 120degrees altho i probs could've as my oiol pressure was still at 3.5-4bar on what at 120degrees, think ill be taking my thermostst completely out at the next trackday, somethings defo not right somewhere either way

oh and the breather problem'ss sorted it seems with now a baffled sump and oil running cooler than before, only blew out 1/8 of a litre all day

brakes were have to say awful, spoke Jason yestiurday as he was doing the day too and he said i need a brace bar to hold my brake servo as it moves ALOT, so will try make summat sometime in the near futre for that...

i also need a new steering rack, ive been thinking its on the way out for ages but i know know its past its days after 23years, 109k miles on my car lol, Jason has a brand new one hes selling so ill be going to collect that this week hopefully

and last problem... my exhaust is stupidly close to the floor now after yesturdays abuse, its dropped down where i had the 4-2 welded onto the 2-1 part of the manifold, its down to i have no hangers on the system at all apart from the 2 on the back box, the manifolds heatwrapped and the crap quality of the the metal on the ashely manifold as theyre known to crack i think its just dropped slightly with the heat of it and the strain from the system weighing it down it fgot worse and worse throuhg the day its not blowing tho... so thats gonna have to come off, cut 1/2 of the heatwrap off and take another trip to piperwerx to get that sorted then ill try make summat for a middle exhaust hanger

but overall car handled awesome, had a few people coming over through the day who were suprised by how well it goes and the main thing i did 150miles out on track and managed to drive it home, ill get these problems sorted and the next traxckday will be even better

Pics from the day -

So... exhaust before -

Name: IMG_1009.jpg
Views: 359
Size: 52.5 KB

removed all the heatwrap off the secondries to check all the welds, still spot on...

so could only mean one thing, the heat of the manifold and the weight of the exhaust system has caused it to sagg, so randomly came to my head when i got the car up on axel stands, jack the manifold up from the flanges where it joins to the system, i did just that and win back to how it should be -

Name: IMG_1015.jpg
Views: 399

perfect... just need to get a hanger made up for the middle of the system now somewhere, when thats sorted i may heatwrap the manifold again or probs just leave it as the manifold is proper sh!t quality metal so rather be safe

also old steering rack off -

if you didnt notice, brake servo brace bar ive made, illsee how it is, i thought it was thin steel when i pinched the metal from work, turned out its copper when i cut it to size and flattened the ends etc lol -

well drove the car last night and the brake servo brace bar has made one hell of a difference, locks up so easy now its scary, going to bleed the brakes again this weekend.

Ordered a pair of Lockable Aerocatches last night for the top/rear of the bonnet, should be here towards the end of the week.

Collected the ball joints from Euro Car Parts earlier -

then fitted them heres a pic of the one with the split gaitor -

so glad there sorted now!

also did a nut and bolt check over everything on the fornt end, everything was still nice and tight after the trackday apart from one thing... one of the bolts on the rear of the cradle where it mounts into the car/chassis is just spinning, **** !

Got the day off work today as work was quiet and so i could get the car sorted...

had the hole in sill welded up and had the thread drilled and tapped to M12, sorted!

First time ive drove the car since fitting the new ball joints on monday, the tracking was quite a way out, so ive done that myself now both sides toeing out slightly, also both the locking nuts on the track rod ends were loose (nice one Ninemeister!)

Just taxed the car too put another year on it and the MOT's booked in for 5pm Tomorrow, fingers crossed!

Purchased a pair of lockable Aerocatches the other day too, will fit them this weekend!

well it Failed MOT yesturday on handbrake cable and steering as the it goes heavy then light etc and excess play in the coloum mounts...

this morning ive made this mess to remove the coloum -

heres the bush thats been knackard since owning the car -

and noticed this part of the steering coloum is bent -

donk know if its meant to be or not dont think so tho...

put iit all back togethe rmakeing sure everything was full socket and nice n tight and its exactly the same, great!

going to collect a low milage complete coloum off a mate this afternoon

also tried to adjust the handbrake cable but i failed so need a new one of them too, awesome.

changed the steering coloum all spot on now, feels like it has PAS now when on the move

Ordered a new handbrake cable, quite a fiddley job to fit but got there in the end.

well car failed MOT again yesturday on handbrake, so when i got home, took the wheel bearings and drums off, caked all the handbrake mechanism/bracket in wd40, made sure it was all compressing spot on before i re-fitted the bearings and drums, sound now, all back together, had the re-test earlier and now its passed

...but got an advisory on the braking system, he recommeneded to take the pads out, regrease everything and check the drums, considering all the drums/shoes/rear brakes are sweet ill sort the pads and re-grease the sliders and re-bleed the whole system then all should be well

Just fitted the Lockable Aerocatches, first one was abit of a ball ache, 2nd one only taken half the time -

had a few alternator problems before the trackday at Mallory at the start of june, new one fitted -

Trackday went... disapointing tbh, i removed the Thermostat... didnt make a difference to the Oil temp like i was expecting, removed the front bumper for extra cooling, again didnt make a difference.

On the plus side the car handled really well, brakes are a BIG improvement with the Brace bar now fitted since oulton park the other month.

I got more laps/track time around Oulton park than i did yesturday at mallory as like 90% of mallory is spent at Full chat so the engines under load alot more than Oulton.

The engine breathed out 2-3liters through the day which i take it was from hammering around Gerrards corner (longest corner in the UK?)entering speed around 80 and exit of around 100, the last 3rd of the corner was full throttle as the car held really well. I did 97 track miles (50% of them at 40mph cooling the engine down), the temp went upto 130degrees at one point but held good oil pressure so the Oil pump must be alright surely!?...

now the hoses are 6" shorter, and they dont raise as high in the engine bay and they dont drop down as low to the oil cooler obviously so that SHOULD help a little too imo...

didnt really make a difference...

got a new oil temp sender and a new oil filter -

Name: IMG_1475.jpg
Views: 298
Size: 122.4 KB

old sender -

Name: IMG_1480.jpg
Views: 297
Size: 55.5 KB

what a little bas*ard that piece of metal is!!!

yes as you can guess, yeh the new temp sender is a winner, took the car out for abuse before after letting it idle for 5 mins went for a little drive, let it idle for another 5mins, then abused it back to my house, the oil temp didnt go over 85 where as before it wouldve been around 110 lol

so HUGE

with everything good theres a bad and my sanwich plate is leaking where it meets the oil pump so ill have to remove the oil filter again and get a correct socket to tighten up the sandwich plate/oil filter bolt up...

also either the sump gasket or the crank seal is leaking too, maybe all 3... ive fitted a new sump gasket too when i fitted the Baffled sump, so thats abit of a mare!

next up Cadwell Park 10days ago -

Posted: Thu Jul 07, 2011 3:01 pm Post subject: Just got back from being away after doing Cadwell Park yesterday...

done 450miles in total, 125 of them on track...

the car was awesome, never missed a beat, oil temp still crept to 120degrees but that was after 9-10 hard laps, im happy with that as thats about 10times longer than before with that old temp sender lol.

In-car vids and pics to come.

The only bad thing tho was the day was cut about 45mins short for me as i had abit of an off in the chicanes at the end of the laps...

i got abit carried away and accelerated that little bit too much between the 2 and car locked up as i broke, threw me sideways, i managed to hold it but it then threw the other way, slid along the grass and into the tyre wall at around 10mph.. heres the damage, ive popped the wing out slightly but its still a mess -

and this is the damage from hitting the kerb marker post before i locked up as i completely took that out and its left a bastard of a crease/mark on the bonnet -

well done the 215mile round trip last week to collect the following...

ERST lsd box -

Name: IMG_1499.jpg
Views: 287
Size: 78.3 KB

as you can see a pair of driveshafts and a brake servo brace bar too, he gave me them for free in with the box... and...

another set of Pots on yoko A048's with 3-4track days left in them

This arrived on Friday before i went to AwesomeFest at Mallory Park for the weekend -

came with a new standard mount and one powerflex one -

the plan is to just fit the backbox so i dont have to cut and chop up the rare/pricey magnex... but lined up with the mounts its 4" short of the ashley centre section -

Name: IMG_1707.jpg
Views: 304
Size: 41.6 KB

went to Pipewerx earlier had the extension piece i needed made and also got a couple of new clamps for it too -

Name: IMG_1710.jpg
Views: 299
Size: 175.2 KB

so... old ashley exhaust removed and compared to the magnex -

Name: IMG_1711.jpg
Views: 322
Size: 123.2 KB

and fitted -

it needs a 3rd mount really as you can see for some reason the previous owner of the magnex has had it ground off as there isnt actually a mounting point for the 3rd mount underneath the car so will have to get that sorted as the magnex is a tad heavier than the ashley.

it sounds like a differet car, alot deeper and quieter!

also fitted the steel brake sevo brace bar, compared to my riggy copper one -

Name: IMG_1714.jpg
Views: 325

fitted -

Name: IMG_1715.jpg
Views: 343

much better!

just need to clean the car, bleed the brakes and maybe fit my R888s ready for Ford Fair

Lovely. I'm not a big FWD guy really but I still love these old Fiestas. Especially with 2.0 Zetec and ITB's or twin carbs they're simply awesome.

ITBs are very rare on mk1/2 fiestas that wa sone of the many reasons i opted for them from the bike carbs

went to Ford Fair yesturday...

The track session was rediculous... the session started 5-10mins late after a car in the previous group dropped oil on the exit of the complex, then the lap after the pace car the marshall was showing the chequered flag meaning if we did slow down and go in then we wouldve only doine 1 lap under the pace car and no flying laps on our own, but we ploughed on and done around 1 1/2 flat out laps, wooooooooooooooooooo lol

0-60 was fun, managed 5.5 so was chuft with that!

You have done a lot of work to this car recently.Im glad you have gone back to the standard bonnet cause i thought that carbon fibre one looked wank and made the car look poo.

I did mallory park in my mates bmw the first corner like you say goes on for ages.

cheers mate , yeh mikes a top guy altho some say they wouldnt go there at all, and the rollers are slightly optamistic...

yeh they were flying, i wouldve been if i couldve stayed out longer but my car doesnt like that first corner and was throwing out oil for fun through the breather.

yeh standard cams just mike did the timing for me, advanced them as much as possible.

yeh i love the look of it standard again now, the bonnet and fogs set the car off compared to how it was

mikes ok he does come across as a miserable/arrogant twat at times though but he certainly can map a car, i actually thought his rollers were rather accurate i used them at a few diff stages of tuning the zr.

id defo advise you get a set of 285 cams in there i remember going from 270 to 285s in my zr and the difference was immense so id imagine would make even more diff in your car.

are you going to the trackday at donington sept 28th?

ive compared them to Awesome GTI and they ran exactly the same and everyone goes on about Awesome how they overread...

mine will be going on the Rollers at TDi North in October at a RR day as theyre meant to be spot on, be good to see if its still making 170+ since ive changed the waterpump (had to remove cambelt) and with the new exhaust...

dunno what to do about Cams wise yet, dont even think im going to bother tbh...

nah i wont be, i dont think itll pass the noise regs at Donny anyways lol

just swapped the wheels over and refitted the 5mm front wheel spacers.

also refitted the Zetec coolant temp sender as i couldnt sort an earth out for the CVH one so it was overreading by miles, rebled the coolant etc

also think ive fixed an oil leak, when i removed the lower cam belt cover i think one of the bolt holding that on was a bolt holding the oil pump on and oils been leaking from there, so i found the bolt and will have to see how it is next time i drive it.

honestly mate if you ever come across of 2nd hand 285s at a good price seriously think about getting them.

good news on the potential leak fix
