[1990 H S2 RST] And So The Restoration Begins..[NEW UPDATE!]

Hi,

Well as per most MK4 escort's mine is in need of sum TLC (and a angle grinder  ) And I have decided to start stripping it back to see what the damage really is...

The plan is to get all the bodywork sorted (Prepped and primed) and then it is going to go off to the bodyshop to do the final magical touches with the paint work. And then get my block out and stripped down (job for the engine rebuilders, get the block crack tested, get my new goodies put in and tested then put her all back together (hopefully, and maybe in time for the summer :top: )

I got too much stuff to list of what im doing, usual things like slight bad boy bonnet, smoothed off doors, bumpers, kit smoothed to bodywork etc etc... Anyway, Iv'e took a few piccys of the little work that has taken place so far, All the body kit has been removed, and side repeaters, badges taken off the wings, bonnect badge removed, has been rubbed down and filled, first couple hours work really. I'll keep this thread updated with the on going joy that is my RST :top:

The Kit Comes Off

Mmmm... Lovely arches...

Driver's Side Arch Gone Right Through, New Wing Needed!

http://www.djxfade.btinternet.co.uk/resto7.jpg

The car is going to need both rear arches replaced, and the drivers side wing replacing as the rot has spread under the front of the body kit arch and rotted thru and crumbled up the bottom of the wing. Above all for it's age and for how I have seen sum!  It is not all that bad and will be minty mint when complete!! Plus, the underneath is solid as the bits that did need doing have been done already ;) :top:

Possible Donor Engine ? Hahaha :top: :DD:

Rear of Sunroof / Back of Roof (inner) :wall:

I know what you are thinking, oh dear, but after carefully prodding  it is all just surface with a small hole on one side, this tho cannot be helped, as most rst's go this is where the water ends up all the damp and moisture that gets in lays here in the back and this is what happens, could have been worse and was prepared for it!

WutangRS 30-01-2004 12:20 PM

ah man its soul destroying when u see rust on the car. :(

mind u your floor plan looks pretty good nick, no large holes :top:

adamS2RST 30-01-2004 01:21 PM

Hello mate,

Yea, I was truly expecting worse! I know how some of them go!! It will only need one half on the drivers side rear, the passenger side pictured in the last pic is solid as we could not hole it with a screwdriver, it is all surface, so gunna grind that down and weld a new floor pan in the other side to make it solid again.

I look at it this way, once it's done, it's mint that's it. I'd rather strip it totally and do it properly than do a half arse job and it just remain a rotbag!

Cheers for the comment :top:

stevo 30-01-2004 01:29 PM

wicked mate, make sure u weld them holes up :blabla:

adamS2RST 30-01-2004 01:31 PM

Whos building ya engine for you m8? Heard vulcan are good   (joke no malice intended!)

Tony Turbo 11-02-2004 02:26 PM

Cant go wrong with a Vulcan engine, and they're customer service and after sales service is second to none ;)

I still have sponge rods they fitted to my engine if you're interested, only 3 though...

adamS2RST 11-02-2004 03:07 PM

PMSL - Never heard of vulcan, only from your Sig Tony. But from what you have said I would steer well clear anyway! I only use SCA and SCC for anything. :top:

RS-adam 11-02-2004 05:46 PM

Come on then lets have an update, any more work been carried out??

I think mines catching up with yours :DD:

adamS2RST 23-02-2004 06:33 AM

John,

Good to hear from ya! Yea, I do need an update, although most of last week I didn't get much time on it, neither this weekend

Most of the time has been spent clearing out (removing all the removed bits from inside the car) and rubbing it all down. Fun!

There will be an update soon! next thing is to cut all the floor out and the arches, but couldn't do anything more with the arches until my inner arches arrive! Bit skint at the mo!

Anyway, new update this week! *hopefully* :top:

adamS2RST 23-02-2004 11:21 PM

Another Update. Hopefully a lot more to come this week! :top:

John Laverick 24-02-2004 09:41 AM

The inside of the roof lucked very similar to mine, what r you planning on doing with it??

I rubbed/scraped it down as much as possible, then treated the rust with 'Krust' and then coated everything in Waxoil and i'm hoping i've contained it and it won't get any worse :?

adamS2RST 24-02-2004 10:20 AM

John,

Yea, I think most rst's have this problem (although how many people are aware of this I don't know. Well I have rubbed it down (with a fucking long pole cos it is a bastid to get at!!!) gunna get the hoover in there sum how to suck all the flaky bits of rust out (this what you get when u open the sunroof in the summer, lol) and I am gunna do much the same get some rust treatment in there, and the waxoyl sumhow, what did u use spray stuff? and how did u get it in there? cos it is right at the back and you can hardly get ur hand in there :? anyway, was possibly thinking about expanding foam aswell but I don't know what effect that will have, also that is where the sun roof sits at the furthest point when it is fully open, so this will restrict this somewhat I would think.

Let me know. Adam.

John Laverick 24-02-2004 10:32 AM

Yea its deffo a twat to do.

I scraped it all out using a long screwdriver and various bits of metal I had laying around (sticks etc   )

I then hoovered it all out, the best way I found of doing this was to cut a piece of the old mans hose pipe and cut an angled end on it. Now feed this into the end of the hoover flexible section and through the smallest attachment. Stick you thumb over any bit left and stick the other end into the roof. :top:

To treat the rust I knicked two of those long poles which hold plants up from the garden and zip tied a brush to the end. This was then used to spread the 'krust' on all the rust.

I bought a high-pressure waxoil kit and just sprayed to my hearts content  I put loads of the stuff in there so hopefully that should stop it. :top:

Oh and in the summer the car doesn't fill up with flakes of rust everytime I open the roof

Hope this helps :top:

adamS2RST 24-02-2004 12:50 PM

John,

Sounds good, I was looking at some of that krust stuff earlier. Sounds good, but I think I will be doing what you did, cant think of any other way, and im sure it will stop it for sure! :top:

adamS2RST 25-02-2004 10:14 PM

Another cheeky little update for you lot. Aswell as cutting out the floor and making sure the fuel lines were not severed! The car has been rubbed down some more, & more bits removed.

Getting there! :top:

Anonymous 01-03-2004 07:26 PM

:content: Where do you get your panels from, like the inner arches :)
