Rear Engined Fiesta mk3 - Small update...

My Mk2 is nearly finished now, its got to a stage I iam happy with as ive had it over 2 years now, and its having a photoshoot for Performance Ford magazine in the next few weeks to finish up the project nicely.

One thing i always kind of regretted was not setting up a resto thread, and been looking for something different as a new project now. So got a bit lucky with this project:

'Crazycage' from here built the car up to the spec you see it here, I plan to finish it up and tidy it up. Old thread:

Its got soooo much potential iam so looking forward to turning it into a total monster. however it also needs a lot of work, mainly body wise. Still should keep me tied over :)
Plan is to put my Zetec Turbo from my XR2 in the back for now, and begin building another engine for the front depending on how well i get on with the rear engined concept :)

Should be fun! What do people think?

Charlie Chalk 09-10-2007 06:07 PM

Whats it for Si? Strip?

danny_boy699 09-10-2007 07:28 PM

that looks mental :top: :top: :top:

will be keeping a eye on this

this car still gives me nightmares after us towing it lol

XRT_si 09-10-2007 10:28 PM

Radders: Not quite sure, but most likely strip, its what ive always been most interested in really ;)

This is the engine currently in the XR2, due to go in the back of the mk3:
https://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y7...7012007800.jpg

And the seats i am thinking of swapping over too to make it light weight:

I was gonna say, It'd be a cunt to make it handle 'properly' for track

Would put in some good times I reckon though RWD

Well technically its all the front end of a mk3, so ill be getting 2 lots of front coilovers and adjustable TCAs, which will allow adjustable castor, camber, height and damper front and back. Take it someone who knows what they're doing and get it corner weighted at the same time and should handle well in theory. Though as i say, quarter mile is my thing, so will probably go twin engine after awhile, but not till ive had my fun with RWD ;)

rst in breaking 09-10-2007 10:41 PM

when we getting a welder and making a start? lol

smitsturbo 09-10-2007 10:46 PM

you should build a twin engine mk3 mate do you remember that green rs turbo pickup with the twin rs turbo engines ;)

thats just crying out for low 11s on the strip, 2 x 300bhp zetec turbo engines

or even it in the boot would be a laugh :top:

any way i'll keep my eye on this one mate good luck :top: :top:

Make it as adjustable as you want, The engine will be to far over the wheels IMO

Chris Todds, although not adjustable, understeers like a twat big time due to engine placement, been it it a few time Simon :top:

Good fun in a straight line though

XRT_si 09-10-2007 11:41 PM

Paul - the welder aint coming just yet ;)

Smitsturbo - Yes mate, I cant help thinking that more and more everytime i look at it, twin 250-300bhp Zetec Turbo engines = 500-600bhp 4WD fiesta :)
11s will defo be on the cards  :content:

Radders - Fair enough, as i said just see how i get on with the RWD for awhile. Its a long way off just yet

rst in breaking 10-10-2007 03:42 PM

trying to become a drift king in this could be a challenge

Stavros 10-10-2007 04:31 PM

trust me when I say it will be horrid, and i mean horrid, to drive.

wont feel like a RWD tho, not a front engine RWD anyhow.

potentially VERY fast down the strip tho :top:

:D

rst in breaking 10-10-2007 04:56 PM

ummmm, sounds like a lot of practicing to be had, do they understeer bad?

Stavros 10-10-2007 05:02 PM

not understeer or oversteer as such, thats gonna depend on the setup and spec, just the weight is in the wrong place for it to be nice and predictable, it will be a snappy POS to drive, there no getting around that.

if you dont completely seal off the engine from passenger compartment you will hate to drive it due to the noise and smell.

the rear compartment will get constantly covered in shite due to it now being open to the elements.

do your cooling setup VERY carefully as its really easy to either get it not working well, or if the rads at the front, massive head gasket blowing airlocks in the system.

Yes mate they do

I very much doubt you'll be able to drift one, if you do, it'll probably roll

maybe he shud put l plates on it for a while?

Charlie Chalk 10-10-2007 05:04 PM

Wont stop it from rolling though

Stavros 10-10-2007 05:05 PM

With the geometry set right they wont understeer bad, but id much rather they did understeer, as soon as they oversteer you will be going round.

Short wheelbase, not much lock, weight in the back, and thats on a car thats factory made to be like that like a Clio V6, factor in the fact DIY ones are cobbled together from 2 sets of front ends etc, and your in a whole world of "not much fun".

From Clio V6s and MR2s to these various home brewed ones, they inspire no confidence at all on the cornering limit.

If you want to push a RWD car to the limit, get a front engine one.

rst in breaking 10-10-2007 05:07 PM

how about stabalizers? lol

Charlie Chalk 10-10-2007 05:07 PM

When I say understeer, Im only going by Chris Todds rear engine supersport

Thats built for strip only though, so it was to be expected to understeer

rst in breaking 10-10-2007 05:10 PM

oh rite, sounds like it will be a toy for santa pod and the mk2 for run around/fun :top:

XRT_si 10-10-2007 07:34 PM

I didnt expect it to handle amazingly well, just adequate, as my XR2 doesnt go round corners very well with rock hard rear shocks and lowered front, was built for strip too though.
I spoke breifly with chip about the twitchness of the rear end so know what to expect, drifting aint my thing, or maybe it is but iam yet to discover it and certainly dont intend to in this car anway :)

Quarter mile monster sounds good to me :D

Steve - remember our conversation about the twin charged Zetec engine? Well this is what i had in mind to allow some traction ;)

Charlie Chalk 10-10-2007 07:40 PM

Id like to see it go up the quarter

Running Nos??

XRT_si 10-10-2007 08:11 PM

In 2 minds whether to build a silly billy spec twin charged Zetec engine (with nos ;) ) or 2 'low spec' engines running standard rods, low comps, T34s and live mapped on OFAB.

First things first, sorting the body out. Its going to be given a full XR2i kit - including blue strips, orange indiecators and original badges, opening rear quarters and maybe standard alloys.

Going to be in the bodyshop for awhile me thinks

After that - full roll cage.

Nice pic in your sig radders

Charlie Chalk 10-10-2007 08:35 PM

That was going to Blackpool on the back of an AA truck

Got recovered back to London on an RAC one!

crazycage 10-10-2007 08:47 PM

hope you have some fun building it up mate and look forward to seeing you at the pod in in the summer :)

will be great for the strip i imagine, no wheel spin issues,
not a hope will it drift.
good project :)

A few?
Iam thinking of buying shares in Stella, its needs a lot of work. Wil be a true monster when its done though :)

XRT_si 08-11-2007 03:14 PM

Finally an update :)

XR2 had its photoshoot, but the Zetec Turbo engine will be staying in it for a bit longer yet, got a few more plans for more power and a strict diet :)

For the mk3 i been busy trying to find a good donor XR2i as i decided this was the easiest way to get good panels and a wealth of tiny silly things such as seat belts, door cards, trim as well as important things such as gear linkage, wiring loom, kit etc... so planning to strip this car properly.

Car i bought was a bit of a minter, shame to break it in a way as it drove nicely, the guy i bought it off seemed a bit sad when i said i was stripping it as it turned out he polished it every month  But needs must

Started stripping this today:
https://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y7...8112007333.jpg
And putting the bits onto this, few pics randomly.

https://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y7...8112007332.jpg
https://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y7...8112007330.jpg
Finished pics tomorrow :)

Also fitted opening rear quarters to let some heat out:

https://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y7...8112007331.jpg
https://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y7...8112007329.jpg
Plan is to put it on Escort Cossie wheels, and leave it looking virtually as it is i.e. A XR2i replica, but for now 13" XR2i wheels will add to the sleeper elelment :)

More soon :top:

Benni 08-11-2007 03:21 PM

Good luck with it mate, I can't wait to see how it progreses. :top:

Mr Sam 08-11-2007 03:37 PM

mk2rstaff 08-11-2007 05:55 PM
