YB engines
Its been a long time , but I was in a 3 door 4x4 yb cossie today and I am sorry I forgot how shit they are to drive, it had a stage one chip and it felt about 260 to 270 bhp, which is more power than mine and once the revs built it did seem quicker, but 24v cossie is much better engine at that power level just more user friendly. but say on a 1/4 mile run he will be say 1/2 sec quicker but on the road I would kill it.
yes its a more tuneable engine, but if you want a 230 bhp sierra for day to day use 24v cossie engine is the one to choose. |
i personally couldnt live day to day with a yb cosworth of any sort, the road going type are so flat and dull to drive , far to docile to me
|
Anything with extra cylinders and/or higher compression ratio will
always drive better in the whole rev range. |

I know but I forgot how bad they were, yes 400 bhp YB's are mental and put a massive grin on, but drivable No
|
id drive a nice standerd or stag 1 cossie
it whats u would rather :top: |
Cossies are like so many of the older turbo'd cars though. It's all or nothing pretty much. My Merc truck at work drives better than my cossie and it's got 400bhp
|
for round town i agree, but past 3k i find the 24v engine dull compared to a cossie
for motorways then you seriously cant compare em,,,,,, cossie all fucking day long :top: but for a fun posing mcdonalds machince then a 24v is a good choice :top: |

Worst choice of car ever! |
I sort of agree with you Bal, but have you driven a standard or a ok stage 1 lately, that extra kick above 3k is not much better than a 24v to me to day it just seemed to rev more.
|
Im a bit pissed and when I first saw the thread I thought it said JCB engines.
|
Ok PON for every day use what are you driving a Beemer( fun car but bad press). I like to have a fun car to work and back for fook sakes I work with computers all day and don't say buy a 205 I don't do FWD
|
i have NEVER driven a stage 1 cossie,,, the slowest cossie ive driven is mine,,,,,, after that the all have been on greys
prob why i find 24v boring after 3k,,,,,, cause if you could add the extra poke there the engine would be cool imo pon a sierra is a perfect everyday car,,,,,,, got loads of room, sublte in looks, not a bad car to drive as in its quite comfortable thats why they sold so well ;) BUT remember that inside the car aint the same as the guys outside,,,,,, inside you care what it looks like :top: |
People should learn how to change down a gear and what a powerband is.
Or try and drive summat like a Honda S2000 or Civic TypeR. |
I use my T4'ed escos everyday and love it even with its lag

hard to do that when in citys though steve,,,,,,,,, cossies are pants round town,,,,, i find a 1600efi ford cabrio perfect for central london ( apart from the leaky roof  ), i find the cossie is the best motorway car,,,,,, does better fuel economy at 100mph too ironicaly  but for going to the shops i can jump in the cabrio left hand putting it in gear and the right starting the car then pullaway with no hassles, stop the car lifting the hand brake as i remove the key and get the milk ect and repeat the same again the cossie has to be driven after a min,,,,,,, drove gentle and then left for a few mins to cool down,,,,, by that time im already home and getting a bath  oh and low comp hill starts  |
The 24v is a lot better around town :DD:
Also just as fast as a stage 1 on the motorway if you drive it proper. My mate killed his stage 1 cossie trying to keep up with a 24v on the motorway :( Steve. |

All I was saying is I can't understand why anyone would want any sierra as an everyday car, unless it was an immaculate cosworth. Even then, most people only buy cossies for tuning potential. Same story with most 24v owners - always harp on about how much better it is than the cossie at low power, and no-one really disagrees........ or really cares  |

Steve. stage 1 cossie is like comparing a porsche targa though stage 1 cossies are pants  |
my car was stage 1 on standard turbo when i got it and actually found it quite useable, especially going sideways etc cos the power was more predictable and less brutal.
can't see why people think they are that bad?? i find mine is good for tootling about, and wouldn't dream of swapping it for a 24v :? and i honestly don't think a 24v stands a chance against a stg 1 cossie :DD: |
I know i done it wrong
But a 24v is faster than people think :DD: Steve. |
Think a big point is missed here. The YB drives low down like any other engine of it's type - ie. a 2 litre. What about people that drive everyday town cars? Corsa 1.4's, fiesta 1.4's, Reanault clio's? You dont hear them complaining do you? I have a low compression 1600, i drive it manchester centre all the time. I find it more than punchy enough - exactly why should i be going fast in town anyway?
|
i agree.24v dont have turbo to worry about so its instant power.so low bhp 24v wins. :top:

or not! i LIKE the power delivery on turbo cars, around town i dont NEED to hammer about with instant throttle response etc,i just drive nice and slow!if i wanna go quick, down change, both feet flat to floor side step clutch, nice! ive only ever driven one 24v car and it was ok,but not as nice as a yb IMO! theres jst seemless power, which i dont like,no feeling of power,no feedback.then when u get bored, spend a small amount, stage 3,lots more bhp!better than 24v! :top:
|
no feeling of power,no feedback.then when u get bored the issue i had was the fact that AFTER 3k the fooker felt flat as bollox,,,,,,, but then my cabrio is like that too |
I have had my 24v engine since 98 and only changed oil and plugs :DD:
Been in 2 cars as well. You do have to drive them hard to make them really go but they just keep going and going. Mine will just do 60mph in 2nd. Steve. |

NA just doesnt do it for me at all!and its not like a stg1 cos is exactly a lag MONSTER!itll come on boost pretty quick if u wanna play and will go all the way to 150mph! :top: |
I agree chaps a YB is more fun, there is fook all down below.eg remmeber before boost a YB is a low comp transit engine with the wrong head for low compression. then boost. a 24v cossie is the last stage of the old boat engines. 2.8 masive torque at 500 rpm fook all power at 3000 rpm. so think about it chaps
|
i already did, still dont like it! :top:
BUT each to their own! |
people that like the 24v's want to try a modern Turbo derv. Got a brand new passat here, and i HATE the power delivery. All really lively at 1800rpm with barely any throttle. Then u boot it and..... nothing else extra - its given its best at 2000rpm! I can understand the merits, but as a peformance enthusiast, its not my thing at all.
|
Big wig you like the rush don't you, I drove a evo 3 mitsi for about a year(fook I loved that car), but thinking about it was shit. drive a 24v or any new v6 or v8 they are much better cars, power with out the boy racer rush, not as much fun, but so much more useable

jonny, yup,i like a car i can use nice and slowly, and itll give me a kick when i want to play, well worth the (short) wait IMO! wouldnt say its a boy racer push though, its TORQUE and lots of it!
|
I barely ever drive below 3000rpm in my 1.8 mondeo even on slow driving, barely ever go under 2.5k on modern turbo diesels and they got no power after about 4.5k.
I guess its how you drive, if you drive like my dad at almost idle speed then yeah, a 24v is massivley better, but a 2.9litres, what you expect? Seing as i dont even drive the daily shitter like that, its not an issue for me. |
Each to their own, i really quite like my cossie for driving around in,
Its a turbo car, there is bound to be lag.. + How well was the car set up? |
