803's ?????

Had the car upped to stage 3 last week by Harvey ( :top: top bloke as always!) Goes like stink.

But................

When speaking to Harvey he advised me not to hold her open at full throttle on motorways for too long etc because its 803's which are fooking pistons left, right & centre. Obviously i'm heeding Harveys warnings as he is my tuner of choice / knows the engine!

But (again)..........

Would it of been a better option to go for a set of light blues / remap?!?!

DISCUSS ;)

Anonymous Nov 23, 2005 12:09 PM

...yes light blues is a must for held top speeds imo....unless you run the greens at a max 20psi!

Franco Nov 23, 2005 12:10 PM

it peaks at 1.9 Bar & holds 1.7 if that helps (on the Defi's)

Anonymous Nov 23, 2005 12:13 PM

Franco DONT hold it flat out....why Harvey sets it up to that is odd :?

Anonymous Nov 23, 2005 12:13 PM

...if you doin lots of high speeds max 20psi in 4th/5th gear on greens.

Franco Nov 23, 2005 12:20 PM

Well he knows the Comp ratio's etc, as he had to skim it / pocket the pistons.

Just wonder why so many people go down the 803 route if there's that much of a problem. In hindsight i would of gone down the blue's route..............But thats how it goes! See what happens after xmas i suppose.

Alloy Nov 23, 2005 12:24 PM

What CC are the light blue's??

Franco Nov 23, 2005 12:25 PM

Pass Phil will know!!

Light Blues are 437 cc/min (part number 0 280 150 400), these are known as "Motorsport 400's", very good spray pattern and reccomended for power outputs up to 370 BHP.

FYI:
Greys are 503 cc/min (part number 0 280 150 403), described as "competition only", and good for power outputs up to 420 BHP.

gurnE Nov 23, 2005 12:52 PM

803's are 382cc/min off the top of my head

Franco Nov 23, 2005 12:55 PM

So my 803's are being pushed to the limits then??

Mike Rainbird Nov 23, 2005 12:57 PM

Jase,
Harvey is wise to advise you that, and it is good advice for any injector that is maxed out, as there is not enough margin left in the fuelling to use this to help cool the pistons, and you're still running relatively high compression. What this will mean is that the cylinder temps will gradually build up to the point where det sets in and BOOOOOOOOM .

Obviously you could have the car set up for high speed runs, but this would mean a boost curve that dropped off considerably at high rpm. However, this would require a LIVE map to det check and adjust flat out at Brunters. It can't really be checked on the road (safely), so the advice is good for ANY off the shelf chip.

Greens are 382ish...

Franco Nov 23, 2005 01:06 PM

I suppose what i should really be asking is should i be keeping her below the 100 mark then, or is it ok on 2/4 or 3/4 throttle. :?

Better be safe than sorry, and i want to learn!! Before i get ribbed!! :blabla:

Thinking about track days, the ring etc really.

Mike Rainbird Nov 23, 2005 01:09 PM

Jase,
What Harvey means is no trying to redline it in fifth or holding it at 6k in this gear for any length of time (as your car hasn't got the power to redline in fifth :p ;) :007: ).

Its not speed related, its amount of time spent at the top of the rev range.

gurnE Nov 23, 2005 01:11 PM

Nailing your car is fine, it's holding it flat out which is the issue here.

If it's gonna melt, it will do so on a top speed run for the reasons Mike has given ( (C) H. Gibbs)

Drive it normally, nail it around all you like but don't hold it a full throttle for long periods of time, thats all :DD:

Anonymous Nov 23, 2005 01:11 PM

Ps

if you have a "group a" head gasket, your pistons should be fine whatever happens

Probably he means that the headgasket would let go first . However, I have found that it is a gradual process and the YB611 lasts 8-12k depending on use (read abuse).

Franco Nov 23, 2005 01:29 PM

You Auto bod's love to tease!!

:fuck:

Gregs Nov 23, 2005 01:39 PM

what about the abuse they take on track days is that ok cuz changing rpm offten?

Alloy Nov 23, 2005 02:32 PM

Thank's Doug.

So, can you overfuel if you use injector's that are too large for your application?

Sorry for all the question's, just trying to learn more.

Franco Nov 23, 2005 02:33 PM

Think thats why you'd need it live mapped mate................................Don't quote me though! :?

Anonymous Nov 23, 2005 02:34 PM

Sorry if that was cryptic, yeah i meant that if you start leaning out the headgasket will go before the pistons.

It was 50% true and 50% just me having a pop at fibrous gaskets for no justified reason simply cause thats the sort of arsehole i am

Ie they are bad, but not as bad as i make out :top:

Franco Nov 23, 2005 02:36 PM

Douch bag! ;)

ENGLISH MUTHA FCUKER..................DO YOU SPEAK IT!! :blabla:

Well the problem you have there, is finding an ECU that would allow you to lower the boost over time spent at full throttle.

Its not really something you can map around when you are right on the limit of flow for the injectors.

Only ways to make it safe are:
dont hold it flat out
change the injectors and remap
lower the boost at the top end

Harvey has set it how he thinks it will suit YOU, if it was someone who he thought would ignore him and sit flat out, he would have tailed the boost off and lost that person power in the interests of reliability probably.

Franco Nov 23, 2005 02:43 PM

Don't get me wrong chip i do listen, i always try to hold it on 1/2 throttle while over say a ton.

Anything below that, she gets a beating!! :blabla:

Unlike some, i need to preserve this engine. So have to ask stupid questions etc!! ;)

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking them

Seriously though, you sound like you will be fine cause you actually not only listen to what you are told, you then go and learn about the reasons why, tuners dream come true :top:

Franco Nov 23, 2005 02:48 PM

Still wonder if i would have been better to just go light blues & remap.

But i suppose i can look into this after the new year etc. Want to sort the transmission next & diffs (3.9) :DD:

That's the worse thing to do, as the fuel enrichment is mapped on throttle position, so give it BEANS (just don't hold it flat on fifth at high rpm for an length of time :p).

Agreed.

Its all to do with the Induction Stroke timebase. ;)

Essay Chip, or shall i do it his time? :DD:

STOP WITH THE FOREPLAY MULLET :DD:

Franco Nov 23, 2005 02:56 PM

OK.........

Say i'm at the ring, coming onto the long straight, red mist, wanna give it some top end(humour me BTW FFS!!)..........................

Do i have to worry about me fooking a piston halfway down.

Signed

Ok what about on way to show, 90ish for half hour then scoobi comes past giving it the biggun, ok to floor it to 140+ ?

Stu @ M Developments Nov 23, 2005 03:02 PM

Ok Chip, ive got a few i did on another forum saved in Word on Fuel Pressure and erm summat else (I forget) so i will make some techy topics for PF :DD:
