What was the car that started it all for you?

Growing up my dad had a few quick Fords, a 2.8 V6 Capri we used to call the Batmobile, an XR4i and my uncle used to race MK2 Escorts but never really took much notice of them. Then I was bought a model Escort Cosworth for my 6/7/8th birthday, can't remember which one, and from then on, loved Escort Cosworths which got me into Fords.
I remember growing up my dad also had a Blue MK2 Escort van and my Grandad had a MK1 Transit and both were literally ran into a pile of dust on the ground.

There was a Pop on the front cover of the 1st edition of Street Machine back in '78.
I'd always had a hankering to build one and that mag was what gave me the push to go out and buy one. I was 19 at the time and had done my apprenticeship on MkII Cortinas.
That one on the cover was owned by Geoff Caves who co-founded the Essex Popular Front which I soon joined and my proudest moment was when my car won Best Pop at the Knebworth Street Rod Nationals in 1982.
Sadly, down hill after that as I sold the car to buy a house in 1983, married in '84 and, once kids arrived the spanners stayed in the box.

My bad...second issue, June 1979. I have all the back issues from no.1 until about 1985 in my loft somewhere, along with the same for Custom Car (my Pop was in the issue with Vanishing Point on the cover) plus plenty of American Street Rodder and numerous others. Even the first five years or more of Practical Classics. Can't think why my wife calls me a hoarder...I just call it insulation.
Another 30 years and they will be worth something !
PS - Henry Hi-Rise is a survivor. Found this via Google from 2013

Cool! Ye nice to see henry hi rise still about, its the only issue I have, fund it on the bay cheap some time ago, so I bought it. Custom car was quite a cool read too, had a few issues of it in the past, but sold them on cause I had too many mags cluttering up my house.

Always remember two brothers about 6 years older than me having decent cars in the mid 90's.
They had Renualt 5 turbos, mr2 turbo, Fiesta RS, Escort drop top, caveleir Turbo. All sorts really.
And then one of them got a 3yr old Escos in red and I thought it was the dogs bollocks. And after a trip round the block in it I was hooked on cars.
Still love a Red Escos over any other fast ford too.
