You can just put a coat of primer over it for now

I know its not ready for primer but I used to just put a thin layer on to protect that would take 5 mins to smooth off again

whats the area???

cover with a grease , then just wipe off and degrease when need to go back to it, or as Poom says, give it a slight cover with primer, use a red oxide tho, but primer is absorbant, so dont leave it to long

the area is half a sill, little bits on the wheel arch and an area just behind the wheel arch on the underside.

WD40 will just wash straight back off will it?

to be fair, i suppose it doesn't make much difference as it didn't take me long to get it to bare metal as i used a wire brush attachment on my angle grinder
